W. D. Gaster was the previous royal scientist before Alphys gained the title. He created the CORE, a machine that provides power to the entire underground. Something went wrong with his experiments. He fell into his creation and was shattered across space and time. He has several followers who speak cryptically of him. These followers have a faded sickly look, and dead eyes. It is suspected that he was involved in the Determination experiments. The determination extractor is remarkably similar to Sans' Gaster Blasters. Sans and Papyrus are related to him.

Gaster is a well respected scientist in the clan. A space time anomaly caused by the accident with his previous experiment makes others forget him when he is not in their presents. There are only a few of his clan mates that are not affected. Charon and Sans are the most notable examples. Gaster keeps to himself mostly. He does occasionally check up on Sans and Papyrus. Helvetica and Lewis usually join the three during holiday celebrations.
