The Headmistress |
Lovelace isn't a dragon of primroses and tea parties as her name and bubblegum pink appearance suggests, but rather a stern, proper sorceress. While she couldn't tell you much about stoichiometry or particle physics, her methodological methods of creating and enchanting charms and amulets with control groups and variable data sets make her popular even among the purely scientific dragons of the lair, who couldn't tell alchemical smoke from miasma. She introduces herself as the Director of Arcane Sciences and Magickal Arts, but most simply refer to her as the Headmistress - a nickname Lovelace takes quiet pride in, as she's glad others have noticed her attempts to bring up hatchings with at least a rudimentary level of education before being sent to the Stormcatcher's service. Despite her imposing attitude and dry jabs, Lovelace has a soft spot for hatchlings, and as such can be found assisting Scholastic with the young ones in the lair's small pre-schooling center. (The Lab runs a small graduate school and will host adult students for years, but no one excepts a three-day-old snapper to run titrations or cast paladin's curses.) Lovelace spends her days supervising the magical research projects and developing protective charms - both to order, such as energy-focusing crystal for a battle mage, or to sell to passing traders, such as lucky earrings that attract insects to the gathering fae. They come at a hefty price, but as each and every amulet is extensively tested and only produced from the highest quality material, they come with a 100% refund promise - and not one has yet been cashed in. Her laboratory is a large, neat, round chamber on the west side of the Labs' tower, lined with floor-to-ceiling windows to best catch the setting sun. The walls have been smoothed and quarried to exacting standards under her direction, and racks hang from the walls and ceilings full of magical trinkets, tinctures, and tools. The very center of the chamber has a massive worktable, with a large magical engine in the center - a terrifying brass device that intermittently pops with pink smoke or sends off bursts of colored flame - with hundreds of rotating, twisting, dripping arms each carrying out a specific task for the Headmistress' research. Lovelace's den lays just a few floors below the laboratory, in a comfortable, compulsively neat nook, decorated with white feather pillows and tasteful statuettes.
