Ghislaine is the outcome of centuries of high breeding in Imperial nobility. As of late, her family's fortune has dwindled under the negligence of her foolish father. Thus, a favorable marriage was set between Ghislaine and a dragon she hardly knew; a newly knighted paladin by the name of Lief, who was far more interested in holy vows than in his marriage vows. Even worse, he seemed entirely distracted by his brother's absence, and cared little to manage time for Ghislaine.

In her boredom and desperation for someone to talk to, she regarded a gilt statue in the gardens of Lief's estate, and decided to ensorcell it. The golden exterior creaked into life, gleaming with arcane enchantment. The creature was once made in the likeness of a great hero, but the golem had no memory and no true persona beyond that of a watchful protector. Ghislaine found solace in talking to him, and eventually gave him the appellation of "Godric," the hero for which he was carved.

Godric now follows Ghislaine everywhere, just as one of her personal guards, though she has the security of knowing he would never share her secrets, and go running to Lief's conspiring mother or arrogant father. It is a sort of loneliness that keeps them together, for better or for worse.
