Her Majesty The Queen

|
Life at first never showed Annalise kindness. She was thrust into the harsh landscape of the Icewarden's territory, those around her as cold as the ice itself. They were taught to be warriors, fighters with a thirst for violence and a sharp eye for battle. The Nursery was no exception to the rule, and by the time Annalise was chased from its warm interior, she'd already claimed her dominance and prowess over the other hatchlings. The ways of her Tribe were simple: you fight or you die. Many times Annalise has witnessed such events: Tribe members found sheltering another from battle, hatchlings kept by their families, wayward strays who thought they could sneak away. All of them made an example, skewered remains around the territory and their homes as a reminder of the rules. A statement of power to keep everyone obedient to the Tribe Leader. The Tribe was everything to her, and Annalise was young. She cheered for these rules, and made sure they were kept. Strength was everything to the Tribe, and thus it was not uncommon for the Tribe Leader to be challenged by a delusioned upstart. Annalise cheered alongside everyone as the snow became a splattered red, sneaking a few swipes in when the challenger would stagger too close to the makeshift circle they converged to create. No had ever defeated the Leader before, not even her own kin, and just as the final blow was about to be thrown, the battle ended as quick as it did with a spear straight through her throat. A hush spread throughout the crowd as they watched their Leader stumble and gurgle, wrenching the spear out of her throat and spraying the arena with its contents. She choked and gargled, a final, dazed swing at her opponent, before finally falling in defeat. The Tribe remained silent, before exploding into a chorus of cheers. No matter how respected the previous Leader was, defeat was still looked down upon. Her Tribemates cheered, but Annalise could not bear to watch them skin and mutilate her. The Tribe did not change much under this new leadership, until a group of foreigners came wishing to talk business. The Tribe waited, unsettled, for the flaps to the Leader's tent to open. It wasn't until what little of the sun began to break into the sky did they finally step out, announcing a partnership. Though disgruntled, they had no choice but to follow, and they thus traveled further away west from the colder reaches of the Southern Icefield.
