innocent

Red grew up underneath the Hewn City’s crumbling arches and between the skeletons of buildings. She and her clan were nestled tightly in the mysterious ruin and they had no plan of letting go.
Neither did she. She was comfortable in the dark and saw the crumbling rooms beneath unsteady ceilings as home. Sure, there were some strange noises at night, and at one point she’d seen something that resembled a grossly misshapen Mirror dragon prowling around the walkways, but it was what she knew. She was happy with it.
The clan itself was a little more unsteady. Even though they lived in perpetual darkness, they were still Light dragons, and the clan’s mostly-Imperial Council of Elders had a serious grudge against the Pearlcatchers who had called it home.
Red only caught fleeting glimpses of the clan’s Pearlcatcher hatchlings, but not knowing who they were and what they were like made her more curious than she knew she should have been. She wanted to know them, but whenever she tried she was taken aside by the sweep of an Elder’s tail.
When the dark Pearlcatcher first appeared, she was alone. She could barely see him through the fog, but he was unmistakably waiting for something.
Waiting for her.
She’d taken one step towards him before guilt caught up to her and she’d decided to go home. What would the Elders say if they found out?
He kept appearing, when Red was out by herself and away from her clan’s boundaries and the protection spells of the Elders. Each time she was tempted, and each time she returned home. What would her mother think if she went deeper into the City with a Pearlcatcher, of all dragons?
Then it began speaking to her in a strange voice that sounded like a thousand snakes were all talking at once.
Come on, Red, it urged. Come into the City with us. We’re so horribly bored.
She took a few steps away from the building she’d been playing in. She was tired of playing alone or with the Imperials. She wanted to meet a Pearlcatcher. Just a hello. Maybe he’d even tell her his name. Then she could go home and go have dinner with her mother.
That’d be fun.
Red walked up to the Pearlcatcher, but when she caught up to him he walked away again before she could even say hello.
“Rude,” she chided, and ran to catch up.
This time, he spread his wings and took off into the sky.
Red was just about to give up and go back home when the Pearlcatcher spoke again.
Not much further. Just follow me.
She followed him, deeper into the city’s twisting labyrinth until he finally stopped and hovered next to a ruined tower. Red couldn’t see very well, but she caught the flashing of his bright blue wings above her.
Go in, and then you can say hello.
She slipped through the entranceway and into a dark so thick that she could taste it.
Something splattered onto the ground next to her and a thousand voices resonated throughout the tower.
Innocent child, they hissed. You should not have come here.
The dark was sneaking up on her like she snuck up on her friends when they played together. It was coming at her from every direction and fell over her eyes and she was going to sleep, whether she liked it or not.
“I want to go home.”
And you will, once you get some sleep. the Pearlcatcher whispered. Then we’ll really get to play, Red. I promise.
Red opened her mouth to say something, but the dark claws reached into her mouth and stole the words out of her mouth as the entity’s wings swept over her eyes, and then there really was nothing around her except the inky black and the sensation of crashing into a sleep that wasn’t sleep at all.
How innocent. How naïve.
