History
Pepper has seen it all over her long years on Sornieth.
She was born a Mirror, and the child of a Shadow clan’s leaders. The youngest of her nest, she had an older brother Liam and an older sister Xyla. All three of them were placed in the care of a mentor as soon as their parents felt they were old enough to absorb the information. Liam and Xyla were the ones their mentor put more effort into. They were the first-hatched, a male and female able to take over for their parents should anything happen to them. Pepper was just...extra. Of course the mentor never made it clear that she favored the older siblings, but Pepper could tell.
Even though her studies were ever so gently neglected, Pepper still learned about politics and clan administration. Most of what she picked up was from listening in on the lessons Liam and Xyla got with her ear pressed against the closed door, but she did learn, and with more enthusiasm than either of her siblings ever exhibited. Pepper wanted to learn, wanted to know, while the two of them were forced into it. Though she often envied and even resented Liam and Xyla for the special treatment they received - more lessons, more power, more experience - in the end it was her youth that saved her. Pepper didn’t realize until later in life just how blessed she’d been. She had much more freedom than her siblings, and could leave the clan if she wanted to with less fuss.
After a few years, she did.
She didn’t look back for a long time, and by then it was too late. Her home clan was...gone. It was as if they had melted into the shadows of the surrounding area. Pepper could still feel their presence somehow, as if they were trapped there, starving and alone, but the lair was empty and there wasn’t a trace of a single physical dragon within a mile’s radius. The whole time she was within the lair, the very epicenter of her old clan’s territory, she felt a strange sensation in the back of her head. She was drawn to shadows but nothing happened when she stepped within their reach.
As she wandered her old territory she discovered that other clans, newer clans, had scraped away parts of her home territory to claim as their own. Alone Pepper had no hopes of reclaiming them and to be honest she didn't want to. Her travels thus far had shown her a wide open world outside of the Tangled Wood that she wanted to learn more about. In a nearby clan she was able to persuade some of the older dragons to tell her what they knew; her home clan had wasted away over the long years she'd been gone. Her sister had left at the start of the decline, but nothing had been heard from her since then; she had been the only one to leave. (Teleri later told her that Xyla had been claimed by the Wyrmwound.) Pepper thanked them for their information and left the Shadow domain for good. This time she never looked back.
As time went on, she accepted the loss of them completely. Her travels helped; she had to be on her guard in the somewhat hostile territories of Sornieth and that left little room for thought. The one time she did lower her guard resulted in a close call and the scar over her eye. She quickly learned when it was safe to be more pensive versus when she had to be conscious of her surroundings. She'd thought that she was mature before, but the long years she spent traveling truly made her wise.
Pepper started making a name for herself as an adviser. It started out with her giving counsel to young dragons she came across and helping them start their clans strong. She would stay with them until she was sure they could survive, and then she would move on. Gradually she started visiting with larger clans, helping them prosper and thrive. She's weathered rebellions, famines, wildfires, floods, calamities, plagues, collapses- all manner of events that could befall and possibly topple clans. Idiotic rulers are, in her opinion, by far the worst thing that could happen to any clan. She's had her fair share of failure, of course, but with each clan she's seen destroyed she's learned strategies for the future. Along the way she’s also learned how to live for the future and move on from the past. If she dwelled on those failures for too long she would never progress, so she had to find a middle ground.
Eventually, she started longing for a more permanent home. At that time she was travelling within the Sea. Deep down she desired a calmer clan with a stable foundation and level-headed leaders, but she would take her best option if her ideal wasn't available to her- and she knew there was a distinct possibility that it wasn't. Pepper paused in her flight upon seeing Alice's pirate ship bobbing atop the water. Thinking it a small clan fitting within the single vessel's confines, she flew down to investigate. To her surprise she discovered the ship was merely an anchor point to the surface and allowed the Skydancer Starling to bring her down to the Dome. Pepper was astounded by the magical handiwork and the overall organization of the clan but could see minor flaws in the administrative and defensive side.
Serakem was quick to accept her into the clan once the Fae had heard Pepper's story. She and Seafoam worked together to give Pepper the fresh start that she wanted, turning her from Mirror to Pearlcatcher and changing her colors and genes to ones the new Pearlcatcher found more agreeable. The huge influx of magic to her body awakened a latent power within Pepper, and Seafoam as Elder Mage took her under her wing to learn to control it. It was strange being under someone's tutelage again but Pepper soon relaxed into the role. It was a nice change to learn something new from someone more knowledgeable on the subject than her. She soon mastered her ability of 'melting' into the shadows and thus remaining unseen to everyone, and realized how useful that could be to the clan's defense. At the same time she recognized that it was what she had felt back in the Shadow domain, but that she couldn’t access it because it was locked deep inside of her subconsciousness. She now always stays in the room with Serakem in that fashion, especially when the Fae is hosting foreign dragons.
Pepper also completed Serakem's administrative circle. With the knowledge she has she is perhaps the most important member, but she never sees herself as better than the others. She knows everyone has their own roles and is happy to fill out hers as Elder Adviser. Within a short period of time she became friendly with everyone within the circle and most of the other dragons within the clan as well. Though she was especially leery of Zelda at the beginning, she soon realized that the tough and evil exterior the Wildclaw put on was just an act. (Pepper still watches her closely, though.) She was quick to notice the underlying tension between Serakem and Rauken that still lingered, and she was surprised at the strength of both of their characters when she learned what had happened between them. She is always willing to listen to and support them both if either needs to air out any frustrations, though she’s noticed that Rauken tends to hide his emotions better and for longer than Serakem.
As much as she enjoys the peace of her new clan, she also still likes to go out for a good brawl every now and then to keep her fighting skills sharp. Scarlett is her favored sparring partner though she sometimes likes to test her mettle against Goldenrod as well because of the Imperial's raw power and unpredictable and creative attacks.
She counts herself lucky that she found her 'dream clan' so soon and isn't planning on going anywhere anytime soon.
