Astra's parents and brother, though not striders, were captured by the shadows shortly after her birth, killed for merely being related to a strider. Though she was too young to remember them very well, she blames herself for their death. When her mother realized the nature of the first-born daughter, she sent the baby away with her father and brother, to whom she bore more resemblance, ashamed and fearful to have birthed one of Astra's kind. However, by the time her shameful offspring had been cast away, Ralari had already been spotted with her daughter, and was mercilessly executed.

StarTree did his best to care for Astra and Shiro, even going so far as to give Astra his old and beautifully made green cloak to disguise herself with. For a few weeks, they lived together in relative safety and peace, although they still faced danger from the shadows. One day, however, while Astra was drinking from a pond in the Gladeveins, she heard loud shouts from her family's makeshift camp, and flew as fast as her young wings could carry her to see what was going on. By the time she got there, her father had already been dragged off by the shadows, and her brother was beyond saving. Devastated, she carried his body to a shrine of the Gladekeeper, where the priests sent him off to the deity to rest peacefully.

As the weeks dragged on, Astra never let go of her father's old cloak, tattered as it had become. Often too weak to fly, she slogged through the marshy Gladeveins headed nowhere in particular, wracked with grief.
