The dutiful, self-effacing cleric always looking to mend the suffering of others.

If bells clang beneath the crackle of thunder and a curiously-scented cloud of incense drifts through the air, it's very likely you've crossed paths with Avernus on his way to his next patient. With wings bearing silver censers and a belt full of healing salves, he's always ready to mend his allies on the battlefield... and put his foes out of their misery as well, if need be.

Despite having hatched among the storm clouds of the Tempest Spire itself, Avernus might as well be a foreigner to the land, as he spent most of his upbringing in the Tangled Wood. His mother was a wandering necromancer seeking to hone her craft in a place more hospitable to the dark arts. His father, said to have been a spirit of courage, was only spoken of in tales. When Avernus was only a hatchling, his mother pledged his life away to the now-defunct Brotherhood of the Obscured Crescent, the secretive warrior-priests of the Shadowbinder. He was not born into the shadows as many of the Brotherhood were, but his mother assured them that the young dragon had great potential. For all the young dragon's tenacity, however, life under the Brotherhood's strict hierarchy seldom proved easy or fair. Never once did his elders preach the importance of equal duty and responsibility, or encourage devotion among all acolytes. Instead, the priests saw him as less attuned to the sacred darkness than his peers. The young dragon was thus assigned tasks deemed spiritually unimportant.

The ancient, crumbling halls of the Brotherhood were well-stocked, but it hardly counted as a self-sustaining society. Even for a relatively small gathering of dragons, it had difficulties producing the necessary amount of food and supplies. A typical acolyte's meal was a shriveled, pallid cave fish served with an assortment of some of the less-toxic mushrooms. Maybe if one was exceptionally lucky, a few of the winged creatures not clever enough to avoid the glow of the insect traps. Meat, or anything substantial, was out of the question for a lowly acolyte. Only the higher-ups were permitted to indulge. Because of this scarcity of resources, the Order often found themselves trading with outsiders. Fine crafts and items of worship came out, raw materials and food came in. And who were asked to transport these but the acolytes, who, sworn to secrecy, proved less of a liability than couriers? Avernus, the fledgling healer, was one of these. He came to take his duties very seriously.

Cones of fragrant incense, glittering talismans, and luminous blue shroom-candles were only a small sample of the goods he carried from the Brotherhood's subterranean depths to the outermost reaches of the Shadowbinder's territory. Trudging through the brambles on his way out to the river delta became both his personal form of worship and his way of practicing healing. Being so large in form meant he could carry more goods. On the other hand, it made it near-impossible to travel covertly through the Foxfire Bramble without suffering more than a few scratches. The scratches weren't the problem-- he loved how the thorns scraped across his hide in the absolute darkness, loved the Shadowbinder's trickery at work-- it was the curious looks the merchants gave. He simply couldn't afford to raise any questions, so he made sure to always heal his wounds before handing over the goods. A combination of spells and his specially-formulated magic salves did the job. Later, these salves became prized across Sornieth. Reproduced from notes Avernus left behind with the Brotherhood, the altered and refined recipes remain in production, making the relic hunters who found them more than a little bit of treasure.
