Biography

Cyphris was hatched and raised by a small clan in the harsh expanse of Charged Barrens.

Though the hound Wildclaw was a natural with the element of lightning, he always knew he wanted more than a life of servitude as an employee of the Stormcatcher. He was never happy toiling away endlessly creating and harvesting electricity for the rich industrial needs of The Shifting Expanse.

He knew there was more out there for him, somewhere. He just had to find it.

As he reached adulthood, he left his small clan behind and started his expedition to the west, first into the lands of the Flamecaller. The Ashfall Waste was unlike anything he had seen before. Miles upon miles of lava floes and noxious plumes of smoke enveloping the air around him, he trudged onwards.

The ground beneath his feet was scorching, but he didn’t dare risk flying through the air here. The thick black smoke already stung his eyes and throat here on the ground. Besides, he was used to walking in the hot sands of his home, this was kind of like that. At least, he could close his eyes and pretend it was home.

Home…

As he pressed on, he found himself not remembering why he left home in the first place. In fact, he couldn’t even remember which way he was going. Had he had a destination in mind?

He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to focus. His thoughts were swimming.

That’s right. He was looking for a new home, a new clan. He figured he’d make it farther than this. He figured he was strong enough. Others has made this journey before. Surely he could do it.

He couldn’t. He didn’t last 24 hours in The Ashfall Waste before he collapsed from heat exhaustion.

When he came to, there was a dark swirling dragon above him, eyes glowing orange like the lava that surrounded him before.

The lava…

The ground beneath him was no longer searing hot. It was something else… Cold? He wasn’t sure, he had never experienced cold before.

Blinking hard, he tried to bring the world around him and the dragon worriedly hovering over him into focus.

He saw above him the most beautiful spiral dragon he had ever seen, a male about the same age as him. He had gorgeous dark scales the color of shadows that glinted a shimmering crimson in the bright sunlight. Over his body, the dragon had a pattern all too familiar to Cyphris. The delicate lines and circles of circuitry outlined his spiraling body in shades of Azure. The dragon’s striking flame-colored eyes suggested he was from The Ashfall Waste, but they certainly weren’t there now.

“Here,” the dragon said, offering him a small leather waterskin, “You’re dehydrated.”

He was right, Cyphris’ throat felt dry and his scales felt hot, despite his new frigid surroundings. He wordlessly took the waterskin and gulped down the contents like there’d never be another drop available to him.

“Do you have…” His voice came out strained and he started coughing. He tried again, “Do you have more…? I’m so thirsty…”

The other dragon laughed lightly in a way Cyphris had previously imagined only dragons from the Windswept Plateau would. They definitely weren’t there though, but where was here?

“Of course, here,” he pulled his own waterskin from his belt and handed it to Cyphris before continuing, “I’ll get you more if you need it. Oh, and you can call me Thlaxes.”

Thlaxes. So that was his name, but it didn’t help Cyphris determine where they were. “I’m Cyphris,” he paused to drink the second skin of water, “but I’ll be honest, Thlaxes, I have no idea where we are.”

“You’re lucky I found you, kid.”

Who was he calling kid?
Cyphris was pretty sure they were the same age.

Thlaxes continued, “You were passed out in the Molten Scar. I couldn’t leave you to die, so I carried you across the sea to my home.”

“Across the… wait, you carried me across the sea? Like, by yourself?” He was dumbfounded. He estimated he weighed at least five times more than the lithe swirling dragon before him. “I didn’t think Spirals were, well, known for their strength.” He tried not to cone off as insulting, after all, Thlaxes had just saved his life.

“Well, yeah. I mean, we’re not, but I’m a mage,” he came back proudly.

“Okay, so… if we crossed the ocean, then we’re… we’re really in the Southern Icefield, aren’t we?”

He hadn’t wanted to assume they were, because that would be as outlandish as a Spiral carrying a full grown Wildclaw across the ocean, but it seemed to be the case.

Thlaxes nodded, “We’re near the Dripcave Dregs, my clan’s home is in the shadow of one of the ridges there.”
