COMET
■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ ▷ Seeker of Knowledge ▷ Enlightened Entity Motto: My existence is but the fruit of magic itself. Character The magical radiation of the Starfall Isles is a marvelous force, forever altering the flora and fauna that live in its most magical areas. The Starwood Strand in particular is responsible for the creation of many mysterious and wonderful beings, and Comet is one of them. He used to be an ordinary, average-sized pearlcatcher. Over time, radiation affected Comet's physical form, causing him to shrink slowly until he was no larger than the average fae. Comet is an adaptable, open-minded dragon, and this turn of events hardly bothered him. Initially, the other pearlcatchers of his clan always thought of him as odd, albeit harmless; in turn, he considered them gossipy and airheaded, but pleasant enough. A fierce love of intellectual pursuits dominated Comet’s life, and he would often ignore his clanmates altogether, retreating to a secluded corner of the lair and working on his studies. While Comet has never been especially cold or unfriendly, the concerns of most pearlcatchers- discussing the relationships and drama of other dragons, defending and showing off their pearls- struck him as trivial and ridiculous, so he never felt there was a point in bonding with his clanmates. There were a few occasions where he lost his pearl, which could easily be misplaced within his chaotic collection of scrolls and tomes. Such a turn of events would normally be devastating for any pearlcatcher, and his clanmates, upon noticing his lack of distress, began to feel uneasy about him. Rumors spread that he was not really a pearlcatcher at all, but another type dragon pretending to be one out of jealousy. The prideful dragons began to scorn him, visibly whispering whenever he passed by and shooting him glares. Comet’s social position within the clan was far from pleasant, so he had no objection at all when his features slowly transformed, rendering him dainty and fae-like. It felt at last like his exterior and interior traits matched one another. The physical changes pushed him to leave his ill-fitting clan at last, knowing he would no longer be welcome there. While not necessarily devoted to his pearl, he saw no reason to discard it, and when it became too heavy to carry he settled in the clan where he happened to be resting. He hollowed it out, converting it into a small library and transcribing all of his work onto smaller documents so they fit neatly inside. Comet’s pearl now contained his life’s work, and he felt protective of it at last. It would be all too easy for a curious dragon so simply carry away his entire home, so he set up an arrangement of enchanted incense around it. This incense had defensive spells cast onto it in order to dissuade trespassers who might be after his research. While it’s not uncommon to see scholarly-minded fae visiting, they must be invited inside; any dragon who touches his pearl without explicit permission is met with dire consequences, getting scorched by intense magical energy and experiencing profoundly bad luck for weeks afterward. |
