"I hold with those who favor fire. But if I were to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to know that for destruction, ice is also great." ~Robert Frost

______ The moon hung high in the sky as the Imperial Female made her way silently through the forest. A small pack was hung over the base of her neck. She let out a muffled sigh as she continued through the forest. Her mind clouded over from the prior months. Being in Shadow Flight proved to be harder than she imagined. Everyone seemed to not like her, and she was constantly left on her own. Was it because she was Ice? Was it because she was different? WAS she different? All of these thoughts plagued her mind over and over, every day and every night. Until tonight. Tonight was going to be different. She was done feeling like she didn’t belong, or that no one cared about her anymore. She had tried so hard to make herself useful and to help the other Dragons as much as she could, but they didn’t seem to notice her reaches for friendship or companionship. She always felt in the dark. Alone, and in the dark. So tonight, she was going to leave.
The forest was growing dark, the creatures of the night began their twilight song and the wind whispered in the trees. The slight chill didn’t bother her as her thick scales kept the cold out. Her pack rubbed against the rougher scales. Every step it took was harder and harder, knowing that she was leaving her home. Even if it didn’t feel like home… The thoughts came rushing back again. Shaking her head, she continued on. Her mind floated back to her childhood. Rose, her father, had joined the Lightweaver a few years ago. She had been a young Dragon by then, and was proud to know that her father was going to work for a great leader! Her mother, Lunari, had stayed with her Clan to raise her Welps and see to it that her children found good homes. This brought a twinge of sadness to her.
“Oh Mother, Father...I am so sorry.” She closed her eyes and walked a little faster. The sounds of the forest seemed to grow louder as she walked. Her slender body glimmered in the moonlight as she made her way through the thick trees. As she walked, she became more aware of soft clicking following her. After a few minutes of this clicking, she tried to lose whoever was following her. She could sense the other Dragon’s presence, but through the forest smells and noises, she was unable to figure out who. She wasn’t out of her clan’s territory yet, so she guessed it was something coming to make fun of her or tell that they were glad she was leaving. As she moved faster, the clicking did too. Finally, she quickly turned around and came face to face with a Wildclaw. Gasping, she jumped back a little, her wings extending as she tried to look bigger instinctively.
“Axia.” The Wildclaw said. His voice was cool and calm as he stared into her eyes.
“B-Blizzard? What are you doing here?” She asked, her voice grew defensive. She was waiting for it.
“Where are you going?” His eyes grew nervous and concerned.
“Why do you want to know? I didn’t think anyone would care as to where I am going.” She shifted a little, worried that things were going to turn for the worse.
“I saw you. You grabbed your things and left. I assumed you were running an errand, or...something. But when you didn’t come back, I got worried. There are terrible creatures out here.”
This took Axia off guard. Blizzard was worried about her? That couldn’t be.
“I’m fine.” She said sternly. She began to walk away again, her terrible thoughts flooding back.
“Axia, wait! Where are you going?” Blizzard, being faster than her, ran in front again, stopping her.
“I’m leave, Blizzard. You can tell everyone to rejoice, okay? I’m not coming back.” Her voice cracked then. She couldn’t believe that it lead to this, but there wasn’t anything else she could do.
“Leaving? W-why are you leaving?” His head tilted back and forth as he waited for her answer. He was worried about her. He had noticed that she was always on her down, doing her own thing. He had just assumed she liked being alone. It was rather odd though to see an Ice Dragon alone. They were usually social dragons.
“What do you mean why? No one likes me! No one would care if I left!” She raised her voice. The anger and sadness evident in it.
“That’s not true.” Blizzard calmly stated.
This made her stutter as she lost her words. Not true? How could it not be true?
“I like you.” He said, his tail wagging slightly.
Axia, the Imperial of Ice Flight that now lived in Shadow, who thought she was alone and forever, was now at a loss of words and couldn’t believe what she just heard. Someone liked her?
This sparked something in Axia. That night, when she was ready to give up and find another home, something had changed; she was given a glimmer of hope. Blizzard and Axia stayed up all night, speaking and discussing the reasons that she should stay. Blizzard told her it was to make the Shadow Flight clan a dusting of crystal light, to give it a dream of wonderland. All of these things made her wonder why Blizzard was being so nice, but through more talking, she was convinced to stay. Upon their return, the other Dragons didn’t change their attitude, but Axia had something new; she had a friend. After many days of their friendships, and after many deep, meaningful conversations after that night, Axia and Blizzard had fallen in love. From the very instant they connected, they both knew a special bond had been made between the two Ice Dragons. Every night, Blizzard would tell Axia one thing about herself that made him fall madly in love, and reasons why she was a necessary and beautiful aspect to the clan. Every night, Axia was reminded of her blessing with Blizzard and this gave her the strength to be apart of the clan, and even to be a mother.
She had learned that even if other’s don’t like her, if she kept her heart open and her mind clear, she would be able to find the light in the shadows.
