Biography
He gazed down from the top of the volcano, where he would hide when others abused him. His talons clenched with anger, leaving scratches on the rocks. How dare they treat me like that? How dare they treat anyone like that, just because the tint of their scales or the way they walk? They made fun of him because he was albino. That’s right, a completely white dragon. The other hatchlings pointed at him and laughed; ashamed, he flew away.
Now, he looked down on them. He could see their small, wooden village. It was right at the bottom of his huge perch, bordering a forest. His eyes burned as he watched their small figures flit through the winding streets, wishing with all his heart that they would be punished. Little did he know, his wish would be granted shortly.
The earth beneath him growled and began to shake violently. Heat shot up his legs like fiery arrows, and smoke began to trickle from the volcano’s maw. Panic scrabbled at his ribs like a caged bird trying to escape as he took flight and aimed for the plaza. He landed, wings wide, and shouted, “The volcano is erupting!” All of the other hatchlings laughed again, amused by his words. “I’m not joking!” He insisted. They still ignored him.
The white dragon dashed back to the volcano’s bottom as it began to pour bubbling orange lava. The dragons had followed curiously behind him, and screeched at what was before them. He turned to see they were frozen in fear as the lava flowed faster. “Run!” He yelled. They began to do so, trying to flee but tripping over one another’s tails and getting tangled up.
He stood, facing the hot, angry sea of lava. He spread his wings and closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. They are living dragons just like me. They all have a heart, no matter how corrupted it is; they all have the power to change. So they all have the right to survive. The lava smashed against him he howled as it ate up his scales and they burned to a blackened crisp. The deadly liquid splashed his body and coursed through his veins. It was all burning, burning, burning. His vision flashed white, and he was gone.
His eyes had been open all this time, but only now could he see. Looking down, the cool moonlight bathed the plaza stones; it was late at night. His heart almost stopped when he saw: there were heaps upon heaps of flowers; native and exotic, piled around him. There were scented purple roses and frosted white foxgloves, there were bright orange tulips and deep yellow marigolds. He stood on a great stone pedestal, and someone had weaved him both a necklace and a crown of flowers. He stood proudly, and continued to watch the village he secretly protected.
