Lore

Rarity and her brother, Crestwave, were hatched on their parents' honeymoon to the Tsunami Flats. She inherited both her gembond and her enjoyment of crafting things from her father. When she came of age, she discovered that she also had another special talent: finding gems. That became her main job within the clan. Some of the gemstones she digs up are added to the clan hoard, some are given to Randi to use in her jewelry, and some Rarity uses herself when crafting colorful decorations for the clan's lair. She also plans and installs the decor for each room; her empathetic senses make it easy for her to design rooms to suit the tastes of each of her clanmates.

When she's not working, Rarity enjoys flying, swimming, and exploring the world. She was the one who went out trick-or-treating during the clan's first Riot of Rot; her Zeeba was one of the best treats she got on that expedition. Besides Randi, one of her best friends in the clan is Enchantment; they pretty much grew up together. She's also close to Starshine and Adi, with whom she shares that Water-element precognition. The three of them share secrets that no one who didn't have it would understand.

Short Story: The Tales of Crestwave and Bluebelle

October 5, 2015

Ever since he was hatched, Crestwave had always felt unimportant and aimless. His sister, Rarity, was blessed with the exact combination of colors and genes that their parents had hoped for, and was treasured and fawned over by everyone in Clan Adeptica, especially Seashimmer and her family, practically from the moment their parents returned home with their new hatchlings. Crestwave, on the other hand, was mostly ignored by almost everyone else in the clan, except for his father, whose looks he had inherited.

As a young adult, Crestwave still had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. He had considered finding a home in another clan, or in the Arcanist's service, but didn't feel especially drawn to either. Then, one day, word of the Shade Plague and the founding of Dragons Without Borders reached their clan. As soon as he heard about it, Crestwave knew instantly that he had found his true purpose in life: traveling the world, helping to heal the sick and injured and fight back against the Shade as part of an inter-Flight collective.

Bluebelle, on the other hand, was hatched later and was a singleton, which meant she was doted on almost as much as her older sister had been. She and her sister were always close, but while Rarity and Spike were able to find happiness in each other, no one ever caught Bluebelle's eye in that way. Wishing to see the world outside of the Starfall Isles, she put herself on the registry of dragons looking for living space in a new lair. When her application was finally accepted, it couldn't have come at a better time; there were three eggs on a clan nest, Fluorine was away on one of her research trips again, and Shadowspell and the clan alchemists were driving each other crazy trying to sell enough reagents and other items to fund another lair expansion. Bluebelle said a very sweet, loving goodbye to her parents and sister, then went off to her new home in the Driftwood Drag... where she immediately met that special someone, Nicolas, and started a family of her own.

Short Story: The Deities Speak
February 25, 2018

"Mother?" Rarity said, entering the clan's kitchen.

Snowblossom looked up from her work. "Rarity," she said to her daughter. "You're all dressed up today. Lady Adeptica let you have a Starwood Veil?"

"Shadowspell let me," Rarity corrected. "We have three of them. No one else had claimed the other two."

"It looks very nice on you."

"Thank you."

"Dressing up for Trickmurk?"

"Well, yeah... not only that, though. There's something else. I need to talk to you about it. May I help you with something?"

"Of course. Help me shell these shrimp."

Rarity washed her paws and joined her mother at the kitchen counter where she was working. Merlot, the Carmine Serthis, was busy chopping glow mushrooms at her own table.

"Something is coming," Rarity said. "Something major."

"Like the Rainbow Bridges?" Snowblossom asked.

"Yes, kind of. It's big, and it's important, but I don't know what, exactly, it is. All I know is that the deities are speaking to us, and they seem... restless. Just the other day, Tidelord said, 'A maelstrom churns...'"

"I believe you. Liam told me his Wavebreak Snarler said exactly the same thing."

"That makes sense - that the elemental familiars can deliver messages from their deities. It was the same for Celestia's Spirit of Fire. She said, 'This inferno consumes...' And even the Windsinger has spoken, for the first time in ages. I was actually around to hear Bronwen's Gusting Goblin say, 'The winds are changing...'"

"Any inkling of what it could all mean?" said Snowblossom.

"No, not really," said Rarity. "Only that something is going to change. I suspect it's probably going to be something we'll all just know, all at the exact same moment, just like it was with the Rainbow Bridges."

"That does all sound ominous. Have you told Talia?"

"Not yet. I wanted to come to you and tell you first."

Snowblossom gave her daughter a hug. "You go and tell them. Whatever it is, we have both our traditional fighters and our Jedi enclave to protect us. Your telling Talia about it in advance is a good thing."

Rarity nodded. "I'll go tell her, as soon as all these shrimp are shelled and lunch is ready."

"Thank you, dear. I'm glad to have the extra help."

"And I'm glad to have the company."

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Elsewhere in the caverns that made up Clan Adeptica's lair, Luke paused in his perusing of a manuscript and looked around. He sensed a change in the feel of the Force and his own Lightning magic. His Sparkling Goblin, Tycho, evidently did, too. The goblin's eyes turned glassy, and he said in a voice that resonated through the chamber, a voice far, far too large for that little body: "THE VOLTAGE! IT SURGES!"

Tycho then went limp and sat down heavily on the floor. Luke got up and helped him up. "Are you okay, little buddy?" he said.

"I... I'm all right," Tycho said, breathing heavily.

"Was that what I think it was?"

"Yes. That was a message from none other than the Stormcatcher himself. He has spoken to all his children this day."

"Master?" said a voice at the entrance to the chamber. It was Adi, one of Luke's students. "Did you sense that, too?"

"Yes, Adi, I did," said Luke. "Tycho just delivered a message from the Stormcatcher, and it didn't sound good."

"If we must fight, I will be ready."

Luke nodded. "I would rather we didn't have to. But if we must fight to protect our clan, I will be there to lead you."

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Luke gathered his fellow Jedi to discuss the changes in the world's magic that they had all been sensing lately, and the ominous messages the deities had been sending. They all agreed that it would be a good idea to coordinate with the clan's traditional fighting forces, so that, if something did indeed threaten Clan Adeptica, they would be able to present a united front against it.

The Jedi enclave found Talia listening to Rarity give her report on what she had heard and foreseen. When the Skydancer saw her friend Adi come in, she paused to give her a hug. "You came!" she said. "I knew you would want to help us."

"Of course," said Adi. "It is kind of what we do, you know."

"Welcome, Adi, Master Luke," said Talia. "You're here to help plan the defenses?"

"We are," said Luke. "If something's going to happen, we will be there to protect the clan."

"So will we. Come on over and join us."

Luke and the other Jedi joined Talia and her fighting forces, and together, they agreed on who would keep watch over what entrances and exits, and how they would coordinate their attacks if it came to that. They all hoped that whatever was coming would be something good again, but just in case it wasn't, they wanted to be ready.
