Biography

Abyss found him at the auction house, when he was just a hatchling and took care of him. She's like an older sister to him.

Nox was tired. His eyes were half closed, the clamor of the marketplace became a dull buzz in his ears. He shook his head, and shakily sat up. Despite the flash healing done to him, Nox's limbs still ached from his fight in the cage. Bred to fight. That was all Nox knew. He was a cage fighter, born and bred for entertainment. He didn't mind, really. His measly pay was enough to keep him alive. Nox was being auctioned off as the runt of the litter, secondhand fodder to be sold off to yet another fighting group. He witnessed the others leaving one by one. They were strong enough, powerful enough to be wanted. He sat and waited. Nox was tired.

It was dusk when a female mirror approached the makeshift stall. She was too far away for Nox to make out what she was saying, but he saw his owner shoot a shocked look at him. Moments later he found himself in step beside the mirror, whose name was Abyss. Nox noticed her toned physique. Perhaps she was a cage fighter like him, and had come to pick up fodder for her training. Nox didn't care if he got beat to a pulp. There will always be a healer to heal him, and he'd get his pay. Fight, heal, repeat. Until his body was too far gone to be healed.

"Hop on." Abyss said, gesturing to a cart, "We're hitching a ride."

Nox obeyed and got on. "Which fighting organisation are you from?" He asked, when the cart started moving.

"None."

Nox blinked, "Then what am I doing here?"

"Freeing you, what else?" Abyss replied, looking straight ahead.

Nox growled, "What are you talking about? I was fine with my life!"

Abyss turned to gaze at him. Nox felt her deep blue eyes pierce through him, "You'd rather die a bloodied mess?"

"At least I was a bloodied mess with food and money!" Nox retorted sharply, "What are you gonna do, stick me in some random clan with nurturing dragons?!"

Abyss' lips turned upwards slightly, "Who said I wasn't going to pay you?"

Before Nox could respond, Abyss grabbed him roughly and flung him off the cart. He tumbled into the dirt as Abyss flipped the driver a few coins. Nox swore, wincing in pain. He lunged at Abyss, only to be shoved by her again. His foot caught on a root and he went tumbling down the steep slope. Abyss came gracefully sliding down next to Nox, who lay in a crumpled, grumbling heap.

"What the f**k was that for, you b-" Nox didn't get to finish his sentence, as Abyss grabbed his face and turned him around.

In front of them towered a huge monster. God knows what it was. It certainly wasn't from any of the beastclans. Its grotesque shape let out a series of what sounded like ear-piercing screeches and snarls, as the thing crashed through the trees. Nox's heartbeat quickened.

Abyss patted his back, "There you are. First job"

Nox felt his adrenaline kicking in. His face cracked into a crooked grin. As he rushed towards the beast under the moonlight sky, he realized he never really liked killing other dragons.

When you start fighting monsters, it won't be long before you become one yourself.

The change is small. It goes unnoticed at first; no one takes his behavior seriously, attributing it to a lack of sleep.

He starts snapping at dragons that bother him. Even Abyss, the closest thing he's got to sister. He lashes out when someone makes a mistake that affects him, a snarl building at the back of his throat and showing in his eyes.

And then it gets worse. A lot worse. His claws snap out without him realizing when he gets angry, a growl gracing his words as he speaks. He becomes more feral without knowing it. When he returns at daybreak, limping and stumbling home, Abyss is usually the first to meet him, guiding him to Lakshmi to fix his wounds.

He can hear her arguing with Araidne outside, their shadows dark against the light of the sun.

It's not a permanent solution, Abyss screeches furiously, keeping her volume as low as it will go. He can practically sense Ariadne pacing back and forth, tail lashing the ground. It isn't permanent, but it's effective. It works, she says.

No, not it. He. And his name is Nox. Abyss yells, clearly furious at Ariadne's lack of concern. I know. I know! Ariadne snaps back. But he can clearly handle it alone. For now, at least.

Abyss growls, and he can see her silhouette from inside the tent, all tense and angry, back arched like a cat. You don't see the toll it takes on him. He comes back worse every time. He's almost lost the use of his left claw, for Tidelord's sake! He can't keep doing this. It'll kill him. You don't know him like I do.

He nurses his left claw subconsciously. Lakshmi steps forward, tutting and growing at his new sounds. She stitches up his cuts and cleans his grazes, bandaging what she can. He tries not to growl at her when she prods one of his wounds.

Abyss is still outside arguing with Ariadne. He knows exactly what they're arguing about. And he knows Abyss's point.

This isn't just killing him. It's taking away his rational train of thought, his self-control, his humanity.

Every night, he fights alone and in the dark, against creatures that don't just go 'bump' in the night. They scream and they howl, and they don't play nice.

He doesn't know how long he can keep this up.
