When this little coatl first hatched, the whole of her clan was dazzled by the pale light she seemed to emit. It prompted them to name her Mahina, after the moonlight she so resembled. From that moment forward, things were never dull; as it quickly became apparent that she possessed power that was as unique as her name and appearance might suggest. Mahina was ever a daydreamer, that unto itself might not seem so strange. Her mother shook her head at her often, thankful that her brother, at least, was a proficient hunter and warrior. It was what she did within her dreams which drew both wonder and concern from them, and her other clanmates: once she entered the dreamscape, she could manipulate it to her will, and bend it into reality. Bubbly and soft-hearted, Mahina attempted to use this ability often to make things better and more beautiful for her clan; altering the landscape, adding foreign flora and fauna, and even making it appear, for a brief time, that spring had arrived in their small corner of the Southern Ice Field. Her clan reacted with intense negativity to this event, and shunned her. Only her brother would speak to her, and thus, she became quiet, subdued. Her bubbly effulgence seemed to dim a little. Still, she endured in silence, developing an emotional hide as hard and shining as her outer appearance might suggest she possessed in any case. One night, these tightly bottled up emotions (the loneliness she felt at being shunned, at her mother's reluctance to even be seen speaking with her) burst loose and she had a most terrible nightmare, which manifested the semblance of a dead, withered landscape littered with the bones of those she'd held dear. It was not simply she who experienced this, but the entirety of her clan. Her power had run amok and become chaotic, out of control, and grown all the stronger. She could now, it seemed, manipulate the dreams and realities of others on an individual and collective level, as well. This event shook her to the core, and her clan had no need to send her packing. When she awoke, Mahina took her meagre hoard and left of her own accord in search of somewhere her power might be welcome, where she might find a mentor to aid her in controlling her ability. That night, the moonlight dimmed as it shone over her slumbering clanmates. |
