Light dragons make the best storytellers. The sun will rise, the sky is blue, and light dragons are the best storytellers. It is simply a fact, as immovable as Dragonhome - and if the Earthshaker ever fully rises from his slumber, the unshakeable truths of the world have already been shaken. Perhaps it is because light dragons place their great hopes and dreams into truth and knowledge, and in the times when rock was hard and carving was not an art, storytelling was the easiest and greatest way to pass down generations of faith, woven into something warm and powerful in its own right. Perhaps it is because the ruins of the Hewn City, the ruins of something wondrous, are made for hatchling imaginations, with its corners and turns and easy hiding places, and in the city imagination blooms. Or perhaps it is the history of the Sunbeam Ruins, the history of the Lightweaver and her first and second children that inspires the thousand courts of the Radiant Eye into making their own history, to be folded into stories. Inti's own name is the name of conquerors and kings, the name of dragons bright as the sun and dazzling in their charisma, the name of dragons who changed worlds. He himself will certainly never join those ranks, for both a lack of strength and a lack of ambition. That is alright, to him; Inti knows himself well enough to know he would burn out if he tried, and go with the strangled gasp of small stars instead of the supernova of the well-known. Instead, Inti collects stories like fine wine and recites them in all the old, formal ways, the cadences of his voice ever changing. They range from the real to the absurd, truth melding into fiction into reality. His stories echo in the dreams of hatchlings, soothing them into the embrace of sleep. And some stories he recites only to Cleopatra, as golden as him, both of them caught in the screaming silence of the wasteland, warded against eavesdroppers and mind-readers alike. Those words live and die in the span of moments, breathed out into the wasteland air and dissipated into nothingness. They slip from him in faltering phrases, drabbles that are lost into the silence - but no, not lost. In the wasteland, all cycles return to the Wyrmwound, and so their only witness is the Plaguebringer herself, which is like no witness as all. Inti speaks words he cannot hear, and Cleopatra listens to phrases she cannot remember, and there is a paradox in the stories told and not heard. Those stories are powerless because they cannot be listened to; those stories are powerful because they cannot be listened to. Do trees falling in a forest make sound if there is nobody to hear it? |
