She dropped the egg from her claws, and it landed on the ground with a wet crunch. Through the cracks frothed forth a foam of bubbles, hissing and spitting before dribbling into silence as the cracks widened like a delta. Black sludge, thick and warm as tar, oozed forth, and the shell continued to peel back on itself and sink into the earth. What it left behind was a small hatchling, whose body was prostrate but in whose eyes glowed the light of a thousand foxfires.
