Shadedancer // Necromancer // Queen of Blackwater Lair // Part One
She sat atop a throne of bones, which in truth was simply a mound of bones from prey and enemies, to her it was her it was the most magnificent throne. The king of the small lair, Rubywing, had taken to a more traditional throne crafted of gold decorated with hundreds of colourful jewels that glittered in the light.
She scoffed at such a throne. A dragon should keep their treasure hidden and dear - not flaunted about and used as a stool! No, her throne was perfect; one any fierce and proud dragon could admire. It was practical. Each prey bone reminded her of the hunt, the taste, the trill of adventure. Every bone of her enemy sung songs of glory and blood. She knew each bone, each spine, every skull. Her throne was perfect.
And her throne was their army. She grinned at the thought of the little lair being nothing without her; for once she had meaning! Borne to nobodies, she would have died a nobody if it were not for her cunning. As a hatchling she was always well versed in magick and politics. She had climbed from the rank of a peasant to one of a a noble stature - a rare occurrence since nobility was in the blood. Se impressed the king Rubywing.
He, at the time, was queenless. He had a dreadful pretty Pearlcatcher he liked to tail, but for reasons Shadedancer did not know he had never made the pretty Pearlcatcher a queen. Rubywing had seen great promise in Shadedancer. He had told her so himself. She had showed him her power, she had promised him that power. But of course it would not be his. He was worthless, wimpy, soft. He did not have a poor life like she did. She was born strong like all peasants and surfs; they all had to be born strong.
Shadedancer snorted. She often had ill thoughts about Rubywing. But she did not hate him. She merely wished he were more front. The few times the lair had gone to war, he had not been in battle. For a king to battle with their own army, with the few living dragons that did fight, was a tremendous thing. The soldiers would have more purpose to fight, morale would be soaring. But he was a coward.
