You walked through the market scanning the stalls for paprika, you had forgotten that wretched spice when you had come earlier and it turns out the dish you were supposed to make really needs paprika. I should just make something else… I could just order out. A small sign catches your eye, ‘FORTUNE TELLING!’ It reads in rough, carelessly carved letters. You give a snort, what good was a fortune teller in this day and age? But even through your disapproval you find yourself walking towards it, lifting the curtain to duck under, stepping inti the tent.
Inside it was cramped but surprisingly sparse, there were rugs hanging on the walls and a small table in the middle complete with a glowing crystal ball centerpiece and a couple mismatched chairs. The tent smelled of cedar and something else that you couldn’t quite put your finger on, lavender? No… Maybe it was eucalyptus?! No that cant be it, rosemary…? Yes that’s it, rosemary!
“Welcome! Welcome!” A loud voice startled you, breaking violently into your train of thought. You whirled around.
“I assume you are here to learn your fortune, right?” A small iridescent Coatl bounded up to you, smiling madly. He was wrapped in delicate silks and carried a small tea tray.
“Oh of course you are,” he paused scanning your face for the confirmation he had expected “Well what are you waiting for, take a seat!” He twirled, his silks billowing out around him.
“Ok, sure?” You responded hesitantly, you were not sure how to combat the energetic Coatl’s undying enthusiasm.
“Alright then please have a seat… have a seat! Make yourself at home!” You rolled your eyes. Oh my, what excellent patience. You sat down reluctantly and the fortune teller clapped his talons together with delight.
He sat down heavily in the adjacent chair and stroked the crystal ball gently. He shut his eyes, smile never wavering. A thick cloud appeared in the transparent sphere, slowly expanding to fill the shape. Shapes danced under the surface, cryptic and beautiful. The Coatl’s eyes flew open and he watched the configurations with delight.
“Aren’t you forgetting something?” He questioned slowly. You tilted your head.
“I don’t think so? wait…”
The paprika!
“So long!” He grinned, held up a pearly talon and waved.
