She had been a hatchling that Dawnflower ran across one day as she hurried to meet Alvar and Breezesong. She was passing over the edge of Crystalspine Reaches when a figure shuddering over an overhand caught her eye. She slowed in her flight, doubled back, began circling. Yes, it was a hatchling--a very young one, less than a day old. She had somehow wandered beyond the protective enclosure of the cliffs that demarcated the Reaches. Any adventurous impulse that had caused her to stray from her own clan was clearly gone--the young hatchling in front of Dawnflower was lost, confused, and shivering. The Coatl's gaze met Dawnflower, and the panicked look in her eyes broke the Tundra's heart.

Alvar and Breezesong were surprised when Bluescale met them at the venue and delivered Dawnflower's message--it wasn't like Dawn to miss out on an expedition. But they hurried back to the clan to find Dawnflower nursing the hatchling back to health, coaxing her to eat. They understood, of course. Dawnflower's heart was too big for her own good.
