“It is better to be looked over than overlooked.”
What did you do?! 'Cheerful', 'smart', and 'soft'; that was how Sephira was once described, mostly with indulgence. The ones who said things without indulgence used words more like 'naive', 'know-it-all' or 'weak'. But 'young' was perhaps her greatest flaw, once upon a time. Young and willing to believe in people. Perhaps that was why things went so wrong, and she first heard the words she dreads the most. What did you do?! The daughter of a greatly powerful magician, Sephira's fledgling years were spent in a kind of joyous playfulness. Magic was her toy and her tool, in some ways her closest friend. She created spectacles for other fledglings and quickened some daily tasks belonging to the adults. Helpful and eager … or, as some saw her, overbearing and obnoxious. With her magical talent and desire to make life easier for others, Sephira was frequently in places others of the clan didn't want her to be. Most of the time, that wasn't a problem. What did you do?! … Most of the time. Honesty, perhaps, was another flaw. Too honest to obey a senior member of the clan, even the clan leader's right-hand dragon, when she witnessed his lethal strike on one of their kin. Too young to realise that a senior member's word carried far more weight than hers. Too cheerful with her use of magic to properly defend herself when accused of unleashing her magic and causing the victim's death. After all, who was to be more believed? A senior member of the clan with finely honed control on the battlefield, or a fledgling with far too much magic at her wingtips and far too much eagerness to use it? What did you do?! It wasn't me! For a long time Sephira couldn't decide what was the worst: the rumours, the doubt, the betrayal, the imprisonment. The place that had been her home no longer was; even if the truth came out, she could never have lived there … and she stopped believing she would get the chance to leave. By the time that chance did arrive, Sephira was practically a shade. She rarely spoke, barely looked up; she avoided touch but looked longingly at the affection her once-clanmates shared. Defensive, sharp, ready to fight or flee at the faintest wrong look, Sephira was alienated even when she wasn't hidden away, awaiting justice. She did not expect the clan's leader to request an outside investigator. She did not expect the investigator to ask for her story as though she were a person. She certainly didn't expect the investigator to argue for her removal from the clan's lair, let alone for his proposal to be accepted. His name was Jasper. He delivered her to his own clan where she could recover and he could investigate more easily without her presence causing tension in her old lair. In the couple of months it took for Jasper to investigate, Sephira's greatest fear was a repeat of those accusations. Those rare times she felt safe enough to use her magic – carefully! – in this new lair, no matter how awed the tone, those same words made her withdraw. What did you do? Her new almost-clan noticed. Cymeri, the clan's leader, came personally to her home to promise her their protection. Justice, he said, is not gained by destroying a spirit. For the first time in quite a while, Sephira felt hope. She began to recreate the spectacles of magic she once had. She began to create things she never had before, gifting them to members of the clan in lieu of the affection she'd forgotten how to offer; pillows and blankets and other cuddleables. She began to show the personality she once possessed – reprimanding the ill-mannered and ensuring the hatchlings learned good behaviour. She began to find a purpose. When Jasper returned from his mission with the signed and sealed proclamation declaring her innocent in her old clan's eyes, she did not hesitate but to say that she would not return. This was her home now, where they saw a dull-feathered coatl and made her bright again with their warmth. Jasper, away for those months, saw the difference now, all the more obvious for his absence. As time passed he saw it all the more. Although his work took him away for long periods, Sephira was always ready to greet him on his return. It wasn't long before they accepted each other as mates and partners. It wasn't long again before Sephira began to learn how to show the affection she'd missed all that time. It won't take long for her to teach it to Jasper as well.
