VALENTINE

As a young dragon, Valentine was groomed for a position of lordship in the Scarred Wasteland. His mother and father taught him to harden his heart and show the weak no mercy. That is, when the king and queen even bothered to speak with him. The dragon who nursed him was a wretched creature, a perfect disciple of the Plaguebringer whose survival had gone uncommended. Valentine looked upon her with a mixture of pity and admiration, much to the disdain of his brothers and sisters. She was his true mother, and he was quite fond of her. Yet Valentine retains very few memories of his early life, only sliced-up segments of time. A sickly, warm green glow. A duo of pale faces, one of masked cruelty and the other of cold hatred. The twinkle of the stars above the Boneyard, witnessing his prayers to the Mother of All Disease.

As was necessary for his status as a future warlord, Valentine spent a good portion of his time training. Those who taught him how to fight often spoke of his lack of courage and described him as reluctant to follow through with a kill. The soft-hearted Valentine greatly preferred worship and the arts to sparring and conditioning. It was no surprise, then, that he felt drawn to the priesthood. He even briefly considered serving directly under the Plaguebringer. However, he soon found he was needed elsewhere. His goddess had blessed him personally, and he was to help spread the Contagion among the clans of Sornieth.

The "disease" Valentine carries is a strange one. When he opens his mouth, other Plague dragons tend to recoil in disgust at the foul scent of rose petals and fresh air. No noxious miasma or torrent of acid emanates from his maw, but rather a cloud of all things sweet and fragrant. Yet when a dragon inhales this saccharine fog, they seal their own fate. For carried upon Valentine's breath are spores that induce a feeling of infatuation in all who breathe them in. Before the fever and chills set in, of course. Spreading love around Sornieth isn't easy, especially when it has an oddly high mortality rate, but Valentine's content with his task. Above all, Valentine believes in the power of love, whether familial, platonic, or romantic. Love, and the pursuit of it, can restore one's will to survive.
