She had found him, or so we were told.
Found the hatchling crushed beneath the heavy wing of his mother, eyes barely open and maw searching for food, but when she tried to feed him found only the blackened stump of a missing tongue- presumably swallowed.
Bolt and Zinz took it upon themselves to nurse the pup back to health, letting him feel like part of our clan, like he was no different from the others.
Somewhere along the line we thought he would have been too young to remember the incident.
At some point, before he grew, we thought that for his sake he would be able to recover and move forward.

We were wrong.
