It's probably putting it lightly that Vala has had an unhappy past.

Unnamed by his family, other than being constantly called a 'disappointment', the Nocturne was abandoned at a young age, spending his formative years wandering, desperately unhappy, trying to fit in. He would use his natural skills of mimicry to try and become what people wanted, to try and be someone other than who he was - no one would like him as he was, so shouldn't he try to be someone who people did want?

It took a long time before he encountered the Golden Canopy Clan, and the now young adult found that he had very little concept of who he was, having spent so long pretending to be what people wanted. Somehow, the dragons that he met could see through this charade, and he was introduced to Briar, another Nocturne who had also been abandoned and rejected, and their mate Eldam. Gentle Eldam asked the newcomer their name, and they quietly said that they were just a disappointment.

Clearly, this was not on, and the pair took the newcomer under their wing/s, slowly helping him recover, letting him slowly work out just who he was, gently stopping him when he tried mimicking their behaviours to seek their approval. It was Eldam who gave him his name - they had refused to refer to him as a disappointment, and so named him Vala - 'chosen'.

It's still a long process, but Vala is slowly working out who he is and what he wants to be and do. He knows his name is Vala, and it means he was chosen. He knows he has the time and freedom to find a path that suits him best. He knows that he loves Briar's rose tea, and he knows that he likes spending time in the gardens, and he knows that he's never really felt like a girl and that's okay, and he knows that he can have bad days and not be judged for it, and he knows that he loves Briar and will remember Eldam with warmth (after she chose to travel on), and he knows that he has a home, and he knows that he is not a disappointment!
