Ai's Best Friend

"You think you are familiar with the Hanami Clan now, hmm? Hah! You don't even know half the story. "

They've been through a lot together, Subaru and Ai. She has been a mentor to Ai all the while, protecting her as she grew up on her travels. Without Subaru, this clan would not be the warm, welcoming haven you see before you. Almost no one knows the truth of the Hanami Clan besides these two. These are secrets Subaru intents to take to her grave.

Subaru hails from the Starwood Strand. She was born and raised in the Arcanist's Domain, which blessed her with a bright mind and the ability to think clearly. She had spent some time in her homeclan, and loved living in the Starfall Isles. She would spend her time wandering around the domain, thinking about the world and learning from the wise Arcane dragons she met. Subaru never intended to leave the Isles, especially for the vast emptiness of the Shifting Expanse, but as she would learn, sometimes the best choices in life are the ones you never thought you'd have to make.

Subaru met Ai shortly after the younger dragon left the Hanami to see the world. Being the naive fledgling she was, Ai had gotten herself into a rather tight spot in the Starwood Strand. A handful of local clans had been overly suspicious of the lone Mirror spending so much time in their territory and they attacked her in hopes of driving her out.

Subaru had heard about this rogue Lightning dragon from her clanmates, but had never run into her herself. While out on a stroll through the Strand that same day, she heard quite the commotion. Rushing to the scene, she found a group of Arcane dragons mericlessly attacking a small Mirror. She knew this had to be the same dragon she had heard so much about. Although she did not know the younger dragon, she abhorred the thought of such violence on her home turf, especially in the place she went to find inner peace. Without a thought, Subaru leapt into the fray. She knew she was not a strong dragon, but she was smart. She was able to convince the other Arcane dragons that the Mirror was a new member of her clan, spending much time exploring the area on her own to get to know her new home. The lie worked, at least for a time. And so Ai became part of Subaru's clan for a short while.

While Ai was tending to her wounds, Subaru became her teacher. She shared with the young Mirror everything she knew about the world. In turn, the Mirror told her what she had seen on her travels before coming to the Strand. The two shared such a passion for the world, it was obvious to the clan that they were becoming closer and closer as the days drew on. Although Subaru had a wonderfully loving clan, she had never been particularly close to any of the dragons of her homeclan. Having a kindred spirit like Ai around was a wonderful treat for the Imperial. She had found her first true friend.

It soon became apparent to Subaru that the young Mirror would not be able to remain in one clan for long. She had the soul of an explorer and she needed to roam. Despite Subaru's passion for the world, she never had a desire to leave or wander like Ai did. Yet now that she was so close to the Mirror, she felt herself worry for the young dragon's safety out on her own. What if something happened like the attack in the Strand? Would another stranger have the courage to stand up for a lone Mirror? Subaru wanted nothing more than to protect her new friend, even if that meant leaving her home. With some encouragement from her parents and clanmates, who all wanted to see her find happiness out on her own, Subaru finally made the desicion she never thought she would make; she was ready to leave the Starwood Strand. Ai was delighted to have a companion on her travels, especially one like Subaru who understood her passion for the world. As hard as the choice was for the Imperial, she knew in her heart that she had made the right one.

And so Ai and Subaru left their clan to explore Sornieth.
