Desperate to fit in, it's obvious Avery is not confident in who he is. As a hatchling, he suffered from low self esteem and depression and struggled to fit in with the other hatchlings: so he would put a mask on himself and pretend to be someone he wasn't, so people would accept him. For most of his life, this worked very well, and he was satisfied.

But it wasn't until he met Yatta from Solomon's clan; her cheerful ways and overall positive energy made him drawn to her. At first, he tried to mimic how she usually was. Excitable, joyous - but this wore him out greatly. Trying to keep such an upbeat mentality exhausted him when he was already facing struggles of his own.

It was then Avery realized he didn't truly know himself, and what he was really like before putting on all these masks to impress the people he met. Before all this sadness in his heart, before all these masks; who was he really? And it was Yatta that helped him discover this, by saying he didn't need to be like her to impress her. She was already impressed by his willingness to change himself to be her friend.

Avery is now a very soft-spoken coatl; but fierce at heart. King Alistair took a liking to him, because of his colouring and how both Avery and Alistair were similar - black and white. Now, he fights alongside his comrades in Solomon's army: his only mask is that of a wolf, and keeps a low profile on the battlefield and strikes from beneath.

His familiar is also his assistant and companion animal and helps with his anxieties.
