"Maps are more for reassurance than anything.
If one is destined to get lost, then lost they will be."

Nazic, a permanent transfer from another clan, is a curious case. No other Missings have been brought into the lair, not unless they were found in the Boneyard, so he is regarded with curiosity by some in the lair. Naturally so. For most of the dragons present, who have grown accustomed to the life of kill-or-be-killed in the Plaguebringer's domain, the Missings (FirstGens, some call them, but the dialect never sticks) were the children of those who could not survive, kept intact by the lingering magic of their deceased parent. To imagine this happening in the "peaceful" territories around them is practically unimaginable, especially to those who were one of those children. Not that Nazic cares. His lack of ancestors is just room for lying. Often he will conjure up tales of his lost princehood, how he once slayed a thousand armies but then hit his head and forgot it all, how he met the gods and they smited his history in vengeance (for what, he never tells). Nobody believes him, even himself, but he finds it nice to pretend for a while. To bring others laughter at his ridiculous tales, woven between lies and the last scroll he picked up, to whisper his accomplishments to hatchlings in a forbidden bedtime story (curfew is sundown, the mothers say) and breathe a silent sigh as they say that yes, they're royalty too! To chuckle with the cynical elders of the refuge as they laugh at the children the next day, musing to themselves about who planted such ideas in their heads. What few people know, however, is his desire to learn his true past. Lying is fine but it grows old and wearisome, and in Nazic's heart, he truly believes that life threw him a bone. That someday someone will come looking for their son, worridly clucking about this and that and how skinny he looks, what do they even feed you here, why do you have such a silly hat so unfitting for a ruler? And he would laugh, and follow them out, telling promises to the others that they too could find their family. But for now he lives, happily, in a home he calls his own. - After becoming settled into his new home, it dawned upon the mirror that he needed a task. And what better way to contribute than to make maps? Of course, rarely are they accurate (he is, after all, completely untrained in mapmaking) but both he and his clients find that accuracy is unnecessary with his creations. If they need to go somewhere, even if it is not upon the paper, they always find it. However, he would like to urge his clients to stop stabbing weapons into the parts of their purchase where they seek to go. It is very destructive to the paper, and maps take a long time to complete, so he'd just as soon prefer that you didn't kill the map and then order an identical one. It's a very stressful business. |
