ISMENE

Carefulness isn't weakness - it is wisdom via precaution.

Ismene is the first half of the two founders of Clan Korppirutto - the First of that very Flock. Nowadays retired from front line conflicts and her responsibilities as the matriarch, she and Jamshid act as unwavering support for the heir and his prince, Aeson and Laramis.

As a young Mirror dragon, Ismene lacked direction in her life. As sparsely inhabited as Sornieth was for a little while back then, she was aimless, and alone. Afraid of such grim images within her own mind, Ismene was unable to explore outside the Scarred Wasteland. That fear bubbled until it simmered, and started boiling over a roaring flame. In yearning not to be alone in the world that wrapped its cold claws around her, she isolated herself to be truly alone. Other dragons spiked up her anxiety like a raised stake, and all she could do, was hide.

However, she couldn't avoid everyone - for both her fortune and misfortune. It wasn't uncommon for her to be lost in her thoughts. They easily lured her in with their honeyed horrors, leaving her in a sleepwalk-like state. Ismene quite literally bumped into another native from the Wandering Contagion, Jamshid. While neither got hurt in the collision, the haughty male wasn't going to let such just slide. In his arrogance and stubbornness, Jamshid followed the fleeing female.

The pursuit separated Jamshid from his pack - though he barely noticed. He was hellbent to catch up with the ice-hided Mirror, and teach her a lesson or two. He was able to chase her into a dead end - but what he faced was something he was not prepared for.

Between him and the rot-drenched stone wall, cowered a young dragon just like himself. Afraid and uncertain, barely able to keep her hunger at bay. Jamshid may have hunted in a pack, but the pecking order left him thin, and fighting for scraps. Seeing Ismene's four, crimson eyes like silvery mirrors of his own gaze, revenge suddenly made way for anything else.

After almost an hour, Jamshid gave up. He just couldn't convince Ismene that he wasn't going to kill her - despite what had happened earlier. Seeing the other dragon turn away in frustration, a spark struck aflame inside her chest. She ran after him, and switched from a chasee, to the chaser.

The two became friends and decided to seclude themselves to their own from existing clans - but a home wasn't that easy to establish. Ismene was still scared. She panicked if Jamshid left her, for whatever reason, big or small. Now that she had found someone, she couldn't stomach the thought of being on her own. Ismene and Jamshid were two sheets of cracked glass, that tried their best to stay in one piece.

Then, rumors reached their quivering ears - a miracle cure for all your troubles. A memory wipe, and a clean sheet.

Both made the decision to leave their Mirror bodies behind - an easy and effortless decision. Who wouldn't want a clean slate? With the help of a small group of draconic children of the Arcanist, Ismene rose anew as a Pearlcatcher.

Not surprising to anyone other than Ismene herself, such trickery didn't relieve her burden of anxiety. As if a scroll would make the body forget. It didn't even wipe her memory clean. Just mangled it around to make it muddy - but not enough, so bits and pieces bounced back a little at a time, until the puzzle was whole again.

In her desperation for company, Ismene accompanied Jamshid to the fields of battle. There she discovered her instinctive need to help, and to heal.

But she could only mend physical wounds.

She watched Jamshid spiraling only further down in his thirst for violence, until she refused to help him if he went on like this. When she declined the invitation, Jamshid replaced her with their second son, Aeson.

What came after infuriated Ismene. Her mate's hurt and anguish bled into their son like from a drinking vessel. No matter how many times Aeson tried to make clear that he wasn't interested in fighting alongside his father - not the way Jamshid wanted - he was always dragged back the next day. It tore at the young Imperial's insides like a jagged blade, and Ismene could clearly see it from him.

So the Pearlcatcher rolled up her figurative sleeves. No more spreading one's demons to another. This wasn't the Disease - but if she had to be the vaccine, so be it.

Ismene accompanied Jamshid to the Coliseum on one condition - let Aeson do what he wishes.

Jamshid agreed. For his own misfortune, the Pearlcatcher had her own schemes in mind. She interrupted the Imperial countless times in the middle of an attack. Stopped him from dealing the final blow. Tore him away from his prey. If Ismene was to aid him on the field, she wasn't going to just allow him to rampage about like a rapid beast.

So she tried to train him - to teach him - to scold him. His behavior was unacceptable, and outright shameful. The way he treated life around him made chills ripple through Ismene's body.

Life was to be respected. No matter if it was a dragon, a Mith, a Serthis, or a mere fly. For Ismene, slaughtering anything like cattle was detestable. It was an insult to Sornieth itself.

But she couldn't mend a broken heart, twisted into knots from sickly grief. Whatever she tried, in the end, Jamshid went back to his insolent habits. She saw him hurting, in and out. No amount of preaching or scolding would help him. It pained Ismene. She wanted her mate to see himself like she did - exquisite. But she knew how one's inner demons were the cruelest of critics.

Even though she didn't really like it, the Pearlcatcher still had one last ace in her sleeve.

The Scatterscroll was the last lifeline, for both her and him. She would shatter if she had to watch Jamshid crumble - and he would never forgive himself if his hurt became Ismene's downfall.

And yet, seeing the tears of his joy swept away her doubts.

  It was worth it all.
