Armel
Orlaith’s Personal Scarecrow.

Part of the reason first-timers are leery of Orlaith’s predictions (despite their uncanny precision) is the unsavoury-looking character she keeps underfoot. Something about Armel’s constant wide, close-mouthed smile rings false - it’s not a smile that fosters trust.

Then again, Armel has no desire to appear unassuming. Even given the erratic flight of Spirals, his movements bring to mind the purposeful skitter of a monstrous, multi-legged bug, or the worm at the bottom of a bottle. He takes his post seriously and does it well – no fear of the tasteless jobs, a good old-fashioned spook and constrictor. Where Orlaith goes, Armel can be found, and whether that’s the point or the problem is anyone’s guess.

Speculations abound about the odd couple. Orlaith does not seem to find Armel’s constant presence worth mentioning. Armel does not behave like he’s been pressed into service; for all that he orbits her. Perhaps Armel’s been hexed into submission with some variant of a Berserker spell. They are the only two who know, and they’re not telling.
