It was like waking up from a long, long sleep. Now, trying to sort her thoughts, she couldn't exactly remember what woke her. Maybe a change of current, a drop in temperature; it didn't really matter. She had awoken ravenous, her metabolism suddenly kicking in after being dormant for ages, and she groaned, air bubbling up as she yawned and began to reanimate her limbs. Slowly, slowly, the rock she was made of gained life again, coming out of this deep state of hibernation. Struggling at first, her muscles and joints new again to her, she twisted and made for the surface, finally launching out of the surf and into the air. She sucked in the cold sea air, letting her body sink back to rest on the water, and slowly let herself be pulled to shore. She now stood, pawing the sand of the shore experimentally, feeling off after years of sleeping weightlessly on the sea floor. The facets of her skin glowed with a faint bioluminescently in the night, and she watched the light dance as she wiggled her toes in the sand. Most dragons of her kind, with crystal hide, where once just rock like any other, until by some force of nature it became animated, with an energy to live, shaping itself and growing into what would resemble the creatures that roamed this new strange world, dragons like the rest. But she had not been welcomed to this world when she first awoke. It had been a time of great confusion and turmoil, and she was one of the first of her kind to wake from the earth. The clans--warlike in their need to claim their lairs and land--would not take her in, driving her out to the far reaches of their domain. Something strange and new and unexplained was the last thing they needed or wanted, and so she was left out to fend for herself. While most others like herself joined up and made their own nomadic path, she had not the luxury of finding such a clan. Instead, she chose to wait, to sleep until the world was quieter...and so she slept, becoming like stone once more, not waking for weather or war, not even when the sea rose to swallow her up and hide her for many more years. But now here she was, in the quiet of this new age, hungry, curious, and once again alone. She would eventually find others, but tonight was hers alone, to revel in this new world she awoke to, new to explore and finally make her own way in. |
