Biography

Astraeus
Entourage | Treasurer
lightningmid.png
Lady of Means

Treasurer and workaholic, Astraeus is rarely caught relaxing. Keen to earn more money for the clan, she organizes trade deals with other clans and is active in the promotion of the mystery of the lair. Cynical to the core, she knows the more exclusive seeming the locale, the more dragons are willing to pay for visitations rights, and that's before considering goods and services. The potential earnings are staggering, and the trade potential lucrative if handled carefully.

For the moment, Astraeus's life revolves almost entirely around work. Her long term partner departed to serve as an ambassador elsewhere on behalf of the clan of his birth. Deeply saddened by the loss of a dragon she loved dearly, she threw herself into her work. Having never understood her son, Sabatia, nor made any attempt to, while Astraeus is not the only one mourning this loss, she mourns alone.

That being said, with her mate now gone, the clan is in need of a proper ambassador of their own if they are to keep the relationships they have built with other clans. Astraeus has been handling the bulk of it on her own, but she talks of finding someone else to fill the position. She holds very high standards for this replacement and it's likely she's looking for someone who can do more than just take some work off her hands.

When she and her sister hatched, the time was as inopportune as the colours on their hides. The duo appeared minutes after the sole successful child in the nest sold to a thoroughly overeager buyer, and their colours hardly held a candle to that vibrant purple. So, instead of the excited cooing and humming that had followed that auspicious dragon, there was only a thoroughly awkward silence when the two tiny Coatls stood on wobbly legs, whilst above them, the parents exchanged worried looks. These were not successful primary shades - one was darker than the mother, the other greyer than the father. They would be very lucky indeed if they found a good home.

But the two adult Coatls didn't want a good home for their precious children - they wanted the very best. And so it was that a day or so after her hatching, the darker of the two was taken into darkness cool and calming, a chamber lit only by the flickering glow of several incense burners. She was left there, in the shadows that hissed and spat - though being young, she soon came to regard the sounds as quite friendly. Sometimes, scales would rustle as the other dragon moved about, took items from shelves, flipped through a book, lapped from a bowl of water. But as such noises were usually followed by gifts - food, warm blankets, a chew-toy - the hatchling became used to them very fast, even looking forwards to them after a time.

And when the hatchling was accustomed to the sounds, Shadbro began to teach her. Not dusty old legends, or stupid spells that served only to terrify the dragons around you, no - how to hold your head, how to speak, how to demand and haggle and play with the emotions of others. There was some magic, too, but it was never flashy stuff, more subtle tricks that fed right back into the skills of charisma and manipulation the Nocturne was teaching her. She learned to hide the true colour of her eyes, how to dull a dragon's senses just enough to make herself seem more important than the rest of the world, and how to truthfully predict just a few small things about a dragon's fortune, so that by smooth talking, a good deal of money could be earned.

Speaking of which - the gold stuff was very important to Shadbro, and this was impressed upon the Coatl. The meaning was twisted in the hatchling's mind, however; money made the world go round, therefore the clan she should follow through the world ought to be that with the most money. Unlike her mentor, she never did understand the importance of staying loyal to just one clan, and vowed to never stop moving between clans until she found one with a wealth far above any other clan. As Shadbro taught her, you had to spend money to make more money, and therefore the more money a given clan had, the more money the Coatl could make for them, and overall the better a job could be done.

A natural gift was never necessary to learn this sort of thing, this curious balance between economics and general social swindling. That was why the hatchling's parents had left her here, Shadbro had explained when she was old enough to hear it; they knew she was not all that strong, nor did she have desirable strengths in colouration or in magic. The Coatl, she went on, needed to work her own way up in the world, earn what she could and hold onto it tightly. Whether this was true or not, it spurred the young dragon onward in those last few days - she learned swiftly, determined to outdo the fortunes of her clan, and that in itself was gift enough.

In fact, by the time she had been taken out into the sunlight, and sat upon the auction block, she could speak. Not an oddity amongst dragons her age, but she spoke slowly, clearly; a sharp contrast to the happy burbling of her sister that descended into things said too fast to be comprehensible. She held herself calmly, a rarity for a hatchling, and she assessed the crowd on a regular basis, searching for the ones in the finest of silks, those with Sprites sitting on their shoulders. Those were her targets, the ones she would address on occasion, explaining why she required a little extra over her sister - 'a life-long guarantee of loyalty', or so she claimed.

Some dragons might have tired quickly, but several days on the auction block, and she was still calling out. She was going to go to a clan with money, so she could earn all the more for them, and she was not about to give up on this goal.

Days turned to weeks and no one would pay. Realizing she was merely wasting time, the coatl left the auction house and began to travel. The road was long and disheartening. She bounced from clan to clan, never finding a place that felt right. The dragons did not trust her assuredly spoken words, or her promises. Even when she made them money, hand over fist, she was met with scrutiny and suspicion. Determined to not be undervalued she kept travelling, until she was in the Tangled Wood. It was a frightful place but the gloom and the twisted paths did not scare her. She felt at home, surely in this land of tricksters and fast talkers there would be someone to appreciate her.

It was in the woods she found them, a group of dragons, two spirals and a guardian who appeared to be out on nothing more than a romp. She heard them long before they saw her, and she was tempted to hide, physical confrontation was not her strong suit. But if this was not the clan she was looking for, perhaps they could give her directions to the one that she was. So she did not hide, stepping into the clearing where the three tussled, she made herself known. It was not her best introduction. Her scales were dull from travel, her feathers ruffled and out of place.

One of the spirals, who seemed to be the leader of the three introduced himself as Anhur, and offered her a place to spend the night. The coatl agreed, disheartened to see this would be one more pit stop on her ever lengthening journey. She followed them back to the lair, where she was fed and given a place to sleep. Not eager to ingratiate herself with the rest of the lair, she retired early, drawing the curtains on her guest room closed.

Still, she was impressed with the size and industry of the dragons around her. In the dead of night, she snuck out to get a better look. The lair was enormous, honeycombed caverns snaked off in every direction. A fair number seemed to be living quarters but some were filled with equipment she did not recognize, and one particularly large cave was dominated by a what appeared to be a large balloon. She decided right then and there, that this would be the clan she would stay with. At least for a while.

As she padded back to her room, the coatl encountered another dragon wandering the halls. This guardian was as dark as night and at first she thought the other dragon was merely a trick of her eyes in the dark. Until the other dragon spoke. She introduced herself as Sharp, the matriarch of the clan. She told the coatl she had been impressed with her poise for a dragon so young and would like to offer her a place in the lair. The coatl accepted, much relieved to have been offered a place instead of asking for one. When Sharp discovered the young coatl had no name, she dubbed her Astraeus.

The next day Astraeus spent with Sharp, trying to impress upon her the value of her skills. She was shocked and taken aback when Sharp told her, she still had much to learn. And learn she did. Astraeus was taught that value was measured not only in the ability to earn gold and gems but in others as well. That treasure was only a stepping stone to one thing, power. And that power could be gained in many, many ways.

The more Astraeus learned, the more she grew to admire Sharp and the clan she had built. After a while Astraeus was put in charge of the treasury, officially at least. Off the record she carried out many duties indeed, and her rank and prestige in the clan rose and rose. The dragons started seeing her as Sharp's protege, the second in command. The coatl welcomed this, now she had the ability to put wheels in motion and watch the returns come to her, instead of going out and scrounging for them. At last, she had found a place she could forever call home.

At least, that's what she had thought, but then the unthinkable happened. Clan Theridiidae fell. Attacked from the inside at the dead of night, by dragons driven mad by an empty pit inside of them. Many dragons escaped but many did not. Bewildered and overwhelmed by the carnage around her, Astraeus retreated. Her skills, so hard won, were not useful in a battle like this and even if she had the skills to fight, it was all she could do to stop herself from turning into a cowering mess.

She hid herself well, gaining a vantage point of the chaos out of immediate danger. She watched dragons be slaughtered, and Sharp nearly torn apart. A wicked part of her hoped Sharp would fall so that Astraeus could inherit what was left of the clan, but a larger part of her was disgusted by the thought, and terrified of being forced to lead a broken clan to safety.

She was somewhat relieved then, when Eriphost saved Sharp. Astraeus hurried to the airship, loaded to the brim with dragons who could not fight and was the last one on before it took off. After the battle it was forced to set down in a clearing, the whole clan could not travel by air, the woods were too thick to set down for food, and there were those who could not fly.

Forced again to wander the woods, her scales dulled by dust, her feathers out of place, Astraeus considered leaving the clan. After all, was it not her goal to find money and power for herself? This clan was broken, and more importantly to Astraeus, broke. But she could not find it in herself to abandoned the one clan she had called family since her childhood. So she stayed.
