The son of two magical beings, perhaps it was only to be expected that Aquillin turn to magic in his new clan.

He tried a range of magic, at first: working with Arfur and Merlin, Lanespra, Talitha, and even Acrell, though he was barely more than an apprentice at the time. But nothing quite stuck. Shadow-born as he was, their magic was all far too simple. It moved one way, stuck and rigid like stone, and shifted uncomfortably against his ribs.

So he went back to the magic of his birth clan, the Clan of Shade Hollow. As a hatchling, he had been able to conjure pictures before his nestmates, acting out tales and legends in bowls and dust-motes for their entertainment. Even his father had called it impressive, and he was fey-born himself. If he could think it, it would appear. Surely he could find some use for that kind of skill.

Ista, as it turned out, was a primarily defensive lair. They didn't try and invade the neighbouring clans, nor did they often seek out trouble with the beastclans. Aquillin's illusions, therefore, served excellently as a deterrent. Adhara was of the mind that peace was better than war, and a live clan was better than a conquering one. So, when he showed her his talent, she asked if he could find a way to expand his illusion to cover the entire lair.

"They can't attack us if they can't find us."

Though he thought it a cowardly decision, Aquillin agreed. It was a simple enough concept, after all.

The next request was much harder. Ista was well-equipped with seers; even for a water lair there was a high percentage of visionaries. They were excellent for making guesses about the future (Adhara, perhaps, put it a little more politely, but Aquillin could read between the lines), but not so good at getting that information out there. And what good was a warning if no one heard it?

What Adhara wanted was a way for Aquillin's illusions to project across Ista's territory, out into the wild ocean and beyond, so that they could reach Tarel and Dramartis and Diaval, and anyone else who happened to be beyond calling distance in a crisis.

This was considerably more difficult. Where, before, all he had to focus on was the place, the lair itself, for this magic he would have to focus on the dragon; a moving force, possibly hostile to the idea of interruption, and almost definitely not looking for his intervention.

He's still working on that problem.

Recently, he's taken the fey-siblings Disgleirio and Anarawd under his wing, on top of everything else he has to do. They claim to be running from an Unseelie queen, and though he isn't entirely sure he believes them, like calls to like, and he's found he can't turn them away.

Besides, a great mage always needs apprentices, and if he can occasionally pass off their work as his own, all the better. And he does need to know everything he can glean from them about this 'Tāyoni', in case she does decide to come after them. He needs to be ready.

And if, in the meantime, he gets to watch them sculpt and bend the world around them, to wonder at the fierce nature that their makes their blood-flames burn, well. No one else ever needs to know.
