The story begins with Aquamarine and Aventurine. Aquamarine is a lapidary, and she names all the children who remain with the clan after precious stones. Aventurine is the clan genealogist, keen on finding the hidden ties that bind, and it's largely due to his influence that so many of their children have stuck around as long as they have.

Aventurine was inspired to take up his role shortly after he first came to the clan, when he met his great-great-grandparents, Yuko, a Priestess of Flame, and Otieno, her Guardian and the clan blacksmith, as well as Otieno's mate Ostadar, and their son Aganju, who was clutchmates with Aventurine's great-grandfather Mouric. Though he thought he had left everything he knew behind, coming to a new place to find a whole family waiting for him was life-changing for Aventurine, and he devoted himself to discovering the truth for everyone else.

One of his later successes was on behalf of his mate, Aquamarine, when he researched a young inventor who came to the clan. He was quite surprised to learn that Xevioso was Aquamarine's half-sister's grandson, though she simply refers to him as her nephew. He specializes in developing assistive technology for dragons with disabilities, with the help of his mate and assistant, Ausrine. They also have three children who have remained with the clan: Ops, the entrepreneur, Ullr, the shapeshifter and Maren envoy, and Circe, the sea witch.

And as for Aventurine and Aquamarine's children? They have over sixty in all, but only five have decided to make their homes with the clan. The semi-triplets, Sodalite, Lazurite, and Spectrolite, so called because of their identical looks, have taken the clan's apparel as their charge, and are tasked with maintaining it, making additions, and giving makeovers to other dragons. Sodalite and Lazurite are quite close; Spectrolite tries, but his unique taste makes him a bit of an eccentric in their eyes. Hemimorphite, born just before Wavecrest Saturnalia, is in charge of organizing all of the clan's festivities and celebrations.

Then there's Fluorapatite, who along with her mate Lauhihi, is a warrior, training to protect the clan from outside forces. This past WaveSat, they had two children, for whom many members of the clan made predictions to celebrate their births. The eldest, Loihi, was prophesied to need to travel a great distance to find what he sought, so when he was still young he set out on his journey. Though he returned to the clan recently to visit, he knows he will have to set off again soon. His sister Limu was profoundly affected by his absence, and her parents' subsequent panic, and made a point of it to touch base with every dragon who traveled through the clan in hopes of hearing from him. Now she's a sort of hospitality specialist, and she tries to make all the visitors as comfortable as she can, and help guide them towards what they're searching for.

Through Fluorapatite's mate Lauhihi, the family is also related to a sorceress, a teacher, a wave-walker, and a band of pirates... and that's just the beginning, really!
