asLbxD1.gif Much of Gourd's life was spent moving from clan to clan. Despite being an Earth dragon, the snapper had little interest in his actually homeland and even less interest in dedicating himself to his birthflight. He never stayed in one clan for very long, and every time he stayed it was long enough to derive some sort of information before leaving. What Gourd always took with him was his knowledge and fascination for all things mechanical. Whether it involved the distinct construction of a tiny kite boat or the elaborate and electrical golems, Gourd was constantly busy. He ended up being a nomadic trader more than anything else and bought useful trinkets and food, in exchange for toys and small useful items. He often enjoyed creating unique tiny mechanical dragons that wound up and glided on kites or air balloons. They sold for a pretty gem and coin and gave him enough extra coin that he deliberately stashed away and purposely forgot.
His life changed forever when the dragon was imprisoned in a Plague clan. Normally, the snapper could buy or build his way out of any prison (it was a tactic he was proud of), but the clan wanted none of it. Instead, they forced him into an arena and made him fight his way out. For an undetermined period of time that was how Gourd lived day in and out. He won his food or lost more than what he came with. With weak flying skills to begin with, his first loss was a wing. The next loss only took a piece of his flesh.
Gourd's liberation didn't come from his advanced knowledge of mechanics and the construction of something unique. It came from another clan, or rather, a collection of other clans. They raided the clan and freed its arena fighters/prisoners. By that time, Gourd had lost more than limbs. Despite being free, he had no knowledge of which direction to go and no interest in going in any direction. They had stripped him of one of his forelegs and the toes of his other.
The clans had little room to offer the freed prisoners and Gourd wasn't interested in living off of them. He was, as far as he was concerned, useless. Instead, he chose to reside at a port in an inn. The snapper had enough funds squirreled away that allowed him to drink the days away and eat enough to survive to the next one.
When the crew of a ship appeared, drinking and jesting, Gourd was told to get off his lazy tail and do something about his life. It wasn't enough, but when he was too drunk to realize he'd signed his name on a contract dedicated to the
Crowned Thresher, he had no choice to wake up from the hole he'd created. The crew was on shore leave and because deserting meant his life was at stake, the snapper had to think quickly because he was in no condition to be able to work.
So, with the remaining funds he had stored, he commissioned a pair of mechanical claws and a bot to help him. With little practice with his new prosthetics, Gourd was put to work on the ship. Nothing was too difficult to follow and despite the joke the sailors had initially played on him, they quickly learned to admire him. With claws to work with and work to work, Gourd had little time to mope and less time to think about the miseries of his past. He could only push forward.
