“Magic can be many things - awe-inspiring, puzzling, mysterious, and quite dangerous. It is because of this that it intrigues me so.”

Once again, frantic screams echoed up the stairs from the acolytes' practice area. Altair sighed. It seemed like a day could not go by without some sort of magical mishap. Yesterday it had been a misfired spell that had nearly caught one of the younger acolytes full in the face, and the day before that it had been an improperly brewed potion that had made the entire Mages' Wing smell like rotten mushrooms for the entire day. I wonder, he mused, what kind of misfortune has befallen them today? Shaking his head, he glided down the spiraling stairwell that led from the main arcane library to the practice area. As he turned the final corner into the room, he found himself quite befuddled as he surveyed the scene that was unfolding before him.
The space had dissolved into absolute chaos. The acolytes were running about in a panic, attempting to address the issue at hand. And that issue appeared to be a strange magical field that dominated the center of the spacious room. But, unlike your usual menacing arcane presence, this one appeared to have trapped one of the acolytes within it. The Imperial was suspended in the midst of the roughly spherical field, a look of great confusion upon his face. Altair recognized him; it was Dorre, a recent arrival from the Ashfall Wastes. He was a promising acolyte, and had demonstrated great magical skill during testing. But at the moment he was quite helpless, dangling in the air. Altair flew over towards him, and began shouting.
"Dorre! What the hell happened here?" he yelled, attempting to compensate for his diminutive physical stature with a magically amplified diaphragm.
Dorre looked about, trying to find the source of the voice. "Grand Enchanter? Is that you? I swear, it's not what it looks like," he called out.
"And what do you suppose this 'looks like,' Dorre?" Altair responded curtly.
The Imperial had finally located the miniscule Grand Enchanter. His eyes were filled with what seemed to be a mix of shame and fear. "I," he stuttered, tripping over his own words. "I was trying out some old containment field magic, from one of those old scrolls from the Hewn City that arrived yesterday. But I didn't consider the fact that it might be a bit hazardous, you know?" He twisted about in the air, trying to wriggle his way out of the magical bubble, but it was of course a worthless effort. "Can you help me, please?"
Altair shook his head in dismay. "I have half a mind to leave you up there, so you could have time to contemplate your mistake, but since I am not sure what effects this spell might accrue if it is active for much longer..." He clapped his forelegs together, and cast a dispersion spell right at the barrier. It vanished instantly, and Dorre dropped to the floor quite ungracefully. He quickly scrambled to his feet, the ruff on the back of his neck puffed out in embarrassment. Altair looked at him quizically. "Are you harmed?" he asked.
Dorre shook his head. "No, I feel fine." His expression was ridden with guilt. "I am sorry, Grand Enchanter. I should have-"
"I do not want you to apologize, Dorre," Altair injected in the middle of the sentence. "I simply want you to realize the dangers of messing around with unfamiliar magic." He pointed to the other acolytes, who had huddled together in the corner of the room. "You could have not only done great harm to yourself, but to your fellow acolytes as well. Would you want that to happen?"
Dorre's ruff pressed back against his neck, and he began to stare intently at the floor. "No," he murmured.
Altair glided up and landed in front of him. "Then please, for goodness' sake, be more careful." He scooped up the scroll that Dorre had been using, as it had fallen to the floor during the commotion. He looked it over, and was more than a little surprised - this was very advanced magic, far beyond the abilities of a regular acolyte. He looked up at Dorre curiously. "I would suggest that you all go back to your studies," he said, simultaneously addressing the acolytes still huddled in the corner. They all scrambled to get to work, righting fallen worktables and picking up scrolls that had been scattered across the floor. But as the Imperial turned to leave, he said "Stop. I want to talk to you for a moment more."
Dorre looked up in surprise. "What is it?"
Altair smiled at him. "I'm impressed. But next time," he said pointedly, "try to impress me without endangering the other acolytes, okay?"
Puzzled, the Imperial nodded, and trotted off to continue his studying.
Still smiling, Altair returned to the main library, setting the scroll he had been carrying down onto the table. His eyes glinted with intellectual avarice.
Oh, this should be interesting.
