Carnelia's first few years were uneventful. Her birthclan were well established, highly structured and its members carefully controlled - everything from food to mating was decided on by the council, and it was difficult for a young dragon to move up in the hierarchy unless they were born to a high ranking dragon. Low born, she was quickly frustrated by this - unsatisfied with the idea of spending years trying to prove herself to a group of dragons that were perfectly happy to hold onto their power on the off chance that they might decide to grant her a few meagre privileges, she left - alone in the end, since the few dragons that she might call friends did not follow her. They'd wanted to leave too, and had been excited when she'd made her final decision, but in the end they were too afraid of leaving the protection of the clan and convinced that the clan enforcers will hunt them down. Perhaps they would have if they'd been a group, but a single yearling Wildclaw full of grand ideas of travelling the world and forming her own clan where she would be able to decide how to run her own life, but who'd never been out of the valley in her life of life and would probably starve or be killed within a month just wasn't worth worrying about. Perhaps they gathered the courage later, but she never saw them again.

She survived though, fleeing south into the deserts beyond the borders of her homeland - the Shifting Expanse is a dangerous land for a lone dragon, but she managed to find both food and water, began learning how to spot danger, and even began to enjoy the harsh, unforgiving sunlight that was so different from the gentle sunshine she was used to. Overall, she found the travellers life rather agreeable, and after a few weeks of aimless wandering she came to the edge of a wide canyon that seemed to go on forever in both directions, and almost too far across to see - Carrion Canyon, she suspected, only knowing of the place form stories she's heard. She made a dangerous mistake then, descending to check out the floor of the canyon and paying little attention to what was going on above her as she wandered along, until suddenly she found herself in a long stretch with no cover or escape route in sight and the feeling of unfriendly eyes on her back. She suddenly remembered what she'd been told about the Harpies that lived on the walls of the canyon, and knew that trying to fly out would be foolish, so simply kept going at a slightly faster pace, figuring she could at least get a few slashes in first if they thought she didn't realise they were following her. It proved unnecessary in the end - the loud wing beats and the earth shaking thud that announced the sudden arrival of a strange Imperial had made them back off.

It was around this point that Carnelia first considered that maybe she still wasn't in control of her life, that there was a force driving her - fate, some would call it. The thought annoyed her, and the presence of the Imperial, Anachronos, annoyed her. She let him stay when he asked even though the request confused her, recognising that it was safer with company and appreciating that he didn't try and talk too much at least.

The years after that were the happiest in her life. They taught themselves how to survive (although really it was mostly Carnelia), and saw much of the world together, moving around at a whim - mostly Anachronos lead, but sometimes Carnelia would hear of some place that sounding interesting, and mostly Anachronos would not object unless the idea was particularly hazardous (It's probably for the best they never visited the Wyrmwound, no matter how fascinating it sounded). They didn't feel the need to seek out any other company, and only made short stops at trade posts or the odd traveller-friendly clan to rest and exchange stories. Sometimes Anachronos would stop and tell her they needed to go somewhere oddly specific but could never say why - by the time he finally shared his gift with her, she'd mostly figured it out.

When his vision's started, she'd been worried. Part of her knew that this was the end of their carefree life, but she tried to hold onto it for as long as she could. One night, somewhere in Earth territory, Anachronos looked at her with his eyes slightly unfocused, and told her about a dream he'd had - a mountain surrounded by Lightning, and a large clan of dragons. He'd deteriorated rapidly after that, and she'd lead him on the long, slow journey back south, convinced that the dream was important, that maybe it could help them. Even once she reached the edge of Lightning's territory, it took several weeks to find the right place - there were several disappointments, as they'd approached somewhere that loosely matched the description only to find it lifeless, or for Anachronos to suddenly stop and refuse to go closer - she'd left him alone for almost a full day after the third time this happened so she could deal with her frustration, exhaustion and worry in a more constructive way then yelling at him and getting no response except the glazed stare that was becoming so unsettlingly familiar, and he was right where she left him when she got back. Finally, she encountered a group of Longnecks on the main northern trading road, who listened to her description, and after a quick private discussion, pointed her back in the direction they'd come from - a mountain they called Catatumbo. As soon as the name was spoken, Anachronos has raised his head in the direction they pointed and let out a low sigh, and she'd know they'd found the right place.

She's suspects, now, that her life had never really been her own, that she had been inescapably linked to him right from the beginning, and that some force was driving them both along throughout their entire life - and despite what Anachronos' gift had done to him, looking back she sees that everything always seemed to fall in their favour. Even in all their travels they'd never had any of the misfortunes that others had, it was as if they were being kept safe. But now that force now seemed to have abandoned them, or perhaps they'd simply reached wherever they were meant to be - but for what purpose? And why her? Why them?

This revelation had angered her greatly, and she'd resented Anachronos, but she'd also realised that if she's being controlled, then so is everyone else - they just don't know it. And knowledge is power, especially since it's clear to her that fate is not set in stone, so long as you know what to look for. She hoped the intentions of whatever had been shifting fate around them for so long were benevolent, but regardless she would figure out it's plan. She won't be a puppet any more, and she will free Anachronos too - even if she can't save him.

Carnelia's birth clan left her with significant trust issues and difficulty with authority. The council blatantly abused their position, and the higher ranked clan members were too comfortable to ever step in and defend the lower ranked dragons - and since vicious competition was encouraged between dragons in lower ranks to help prevent organised rebellion there was little trust or even friendship between them. She had mellowed by the time she joined Clan Deepspark, partially though Anachronos' influence and partially just from having been out of such a toxic atmosphere for many years, and usually finds it's fairly level structure agreeable. She still has a few clashes now and then, but it's never serious - mostly just a few heated words now and again with Yalia over extremely trivial things (it might be hard to see from the outside, but the two like each other - their arguments serve as much needed stress relief). She tends to be hot-headed and often unnecessarily argumentative (in fact many would say that she enjoys arguing, and they're not wrong) but she's good at seeing other points of view once she listens and considers, and can be good at making compromises - but even then she's not afraid to say exactly what she thinks, even if it isn't complimentary.

When she first met Anachronos she was very unsure of him. Over time she came to love him dearly - his calm nature and and shrewd mind complimented her more impulsive nature greatly, and she appreciated his good humour. He's her best friend and she misses him greatly, and grieves for him even as she tells herself that he's not truly gone and that she can still bring him back; Those days when he's "awake" are no comfort to her, and if anything they make the rest of the time harder - like a dream inside of a nightmare.

(She's still convinced that his dream, years ago now, was a sign that something or someone within the mountain can save him - but sometimes, on the rare occasion she leaves his side and spends time with her other friends and allows herself to rest, just for a little while, that another thought comes to her. That maybe it wasn't a sign for him, maybe it was for her - his way of making sure she has a home and a family for when he couldn't be there any more. Maybe he wants her to move on, but she's not ready to let him go just yet, and she couldn't abandon him - she'll keep watching over him, no matter how tired she is. She is happy with their clan, but she would give them up if it would bring him back)

Many members objected to them being allowed to stay - a "sick" Imperial was a risk, and even after Carnelia was finally honest about his condition many didn't change their opinion. Despite this, she is friendly enough with most of the clan, and has several close friends - Ishanah, the healer who tried her best to help Anachronos before she realised the real problem, is one of the closest and the one she'll talk to when she needs to. Cassia has taken to looking out for for her too since they spend so much time in her sanctum, even offering to watch over Anachronos when Carnelia needs a break even though he makes her nervous. One of the guards, Trini, seems oddly fond of them both and keeps a close eye when he goes wandering (and usually deals with the Captain when she gets annoyed by it). Voluspa, a fairly new member of the clan has committed to help find a way to help Anachronos, and Carnelia certainly appreciates her enthusiasm but finds her a bit too perky and talkative in large doses (and her silence during scrying sessions is often a relief).

She is often annoyed by the mages and their habit of treating Anachronos as a curiosity instead of a person - even though she is grateful for their interest and hopeful that they'll find a way to help, she doubts they have his best interests at heart and is worried that they might cause more harm then good. She is very grateful to Yuri, the alchemist, for their calming medicines and their promise to look for an elixir that will suppress his visions at least temporarily - however she refuses to take the ones that they try to give her, and although she doesn't doubt Yuri's sincerity she is still pretty distrustful of alchemy as a craft and always worries about the possible side-effects.

She very much dislikes Areli, the strange Skydancer that lurks around the Barrow caves and often watches Anachronos from the shadows - she chases him off every time, but he always returns, much to her frustration - as well as the strange fae that sometimes appear in the same area. She doesn't know what they wants, but she's certain that it's sinister, and she won't let anyone do anything to harm her friend.
