Sanj is known as the clan's anchoring point. It's an oddly immobile role for a (supposedly) ever-wandering Snapper to take, but she's forsaken her ancient routes to join this clan, and she's determined to make herself useful here. She's a nomad no longer, and her new life needs her more than her old (except those times late at night, as all the others are asleep, when she finds herself tracing patterns into the ground - patterns she used to walk, on a much grander scale). At first, she was content with only her assigned role: walking on patrol makes use of something she's skilled at. She could walk in a fixed pattern forever, if she needed to.

But as time wore on, and her urges to wander were more and more often satisfied by her daily rounds, she found herself seeking something else to do. She took more nocturnal shifts than she had to, just to fill the lonely night hours in between the Spirals' nocturnal bursts of energy. Without fail, even taking into account haphazard sleeping schedules, there are always times when not a soul in the clan is awake save for her.

It can drive a lady crazy, sitting in the dark with nothing to do. Coven authorities eventually forbade her from taking all the night shifts - even if she doesn't sleep, she needs physical rest, and it isn't fair to the other dragons if she takes their jobs. And so she took to checking on her clanmates; she slinks through the camp in the middle of the night, as careful as she can with her heavy footsteps and hard-to-maneuver bulk, and she peeks in on sleeping dragons for anyone who's awake contemplating their doubts.

She was known, even back before all this, as someone to trust and someone who could be patient with even the sulkiest hatchling. And so when dragons young and old spotted her checking in on them in the middle of their self-questioning (she's caught most dragons doing this, in some variation or other: doubting their skill, doubting their kindness, doubting their sense of self) they aren't hostile to the notion of letting her listen.

And it turns out putting your worries to words can force them into manageable form; it's either a solvable problem, maybe needing some work, or it sounds silly enough to not bother with again. Sanj remembers everything, as a good Snapper does, and so now whenever she notices a dragon acting off, she knows exactly what to ask them about.
