“Paying 6,000 treasure for Exalt fodder!”
It was an honor, they said, to be Exalted. To serve the great deities themselves, to fight for your flight. To be sent off into battle, against the Beastclans, against your fellow dragons. It was an honor. Or so it would be, for most excited dragons. But something deep stirred in the heart of a young dragon. A simple question came up, one question that could mean chaos. “Why?” And it was simple. Clan leaders didn’t care what happened to the other dragons’ offspring. They didn’t care if that young, just-born hatchling was about to be sent off into battle. All they were after was treasure. They wanted that large bounty that the deities granted, for each of the Exalted. They were power hungry, wealth hungry. And so came the Renegades. They were the ones who escaped from their leaders’ claws, the ones who snuck away before they were Exalted. They found each other, and went off to seek a new home. They donned Cowls to hide their true identity, proof that they’d abandoned their Flights. Each dragon had a different story, a different past. But they all shared one thing. Spite, for the Clans that abandoned them. For every uprising, every plan, there has to be a leader. She was born deep in the Shifting Expanse, to two proud parents in an old but not too well known clan. As a member of a frequently Dominating flight, they were a wealthy group of fighters. Her father was a high-levelled Coli fighter, and her mother was well respected within the clan. She was named Ithuriel, after an angel, and was told she would have a wonderful home, forever in the Lightning flight. And she believed it, fully, until the day her father left. It was another Dominance push, hundreds gathered in the Shifting Expanse, ready to fight for their Flight. Her father was sent with them. She was heartbroken, terrified, and left alone - for soon after, two of her siblings were Exalted, leaving her with just her mother and her last younger brother. Somehow, she knew she was next. She didn’t care how everyone told her she was ‘too pretty to Exalt’. Her nightmares were haunted by the glaring eyes of other Flights’ fighters, the shrieks of the Beastclans. And so she ran. She ran, thinking nothing but of a place where she wouldn’t have to fight. And yet, somewhere deep in her heart, she knew she’d never be able to face her Clan the same way again. She would find a weaker Clan, a Clan not so involved in battle, and she would plot. Plot her way to revenge. She quickly renamed herself ‘Renegade’, and set off to find more ruined souls to join her.
