Biography

Athame
|| Scientist || Alchemist ||
Name Meaning: A ceremonial blade used in witchcraft

Athame is the name of a sacred dagger, used in rituals intended to bring about peace and harmony. It represents fire, passion, and strength. All are appropriate when referring to the small Fae known as Athame, who does everything in her power to deserve her blessed name. She is an alchemist, mixing together all types of poultices and pungent ointments, intended to do everything from eliminating bad breath to instantaneously healing broken limbs (which her clanmates seem to suffer annoyingly often from gathering).

She spends almost all of her time in her cave chamber, excitedly chatting with her neighbor Fawn, who is a frequent visitor to her alchemy shop. Although not a particularly large dragon, Fawn towers over the tiny Fae, and as such is often pressed into service retrieving ingredients from high shelves when Athame is too focused to fly to them. Fawn doesn’t mind, though; she’d much rather help than not, and although she is very laid-back, she finds it somehow calming to be around the excitable Fae. Sometimes, Fawn actively helps in the brewing of potions, although this usually only happens when a large volume is needed for some emergency.

Athame entered the clan as a Spiral, but only a few short months after she had set up her own alchemy shop (putting into practice what she had learned at Rue’s Orphanage) she was involved in a massive accident when a potion intended to act as a temporary disguising agent was heated improperly by faulty equipment, causing it to explode and coat the entire room. When she was retrieved from the now-magically-hazardous cave chamber by the cleanup crew, she was completely changed – everything from the color of her wings to the pattern on her body was different.

The most drastic change is that, that was the day that she became a Fae. And while she has gotten used to her new form for the most part, flying is still a little bit tricky when she still expects to change course with the secondary wings that are no longer on her lower legs. She does try, though, and when pressed into service as a battlefield medic she has shown herself to be capable of quick decision making and excellent diagnostic skills, always knowing exactly what dose of what potion, poultice, or ointment to use for any injury or disease.

Her temperament has changed little from her days as a Spiral, however. Always flitting from one project to the next, never bored because she barely gives herself enough time to sleep between tests. The solutions to various insect-borne diseases have been credited to her, and with her Leftover Residue familiar she has been able to synthesize magically-imbued edible tablets that flush poisons out of the system, which once saved the life of a clanmate who was poisoned by a particularly sneaky Beastclan.

Although Athame could very easily become an important figure in the clan’s politics, she has no interest in others bending to her will. She’s a dragon-watcher, always interested in the mechanics behind social interaction, and she would do nothing to disturb the beautiful equilibrium that the clan has reached. Occasionally, when not working on her experiments, she is found sitting outside her cave chamber, simply watching other dragons stroll past, listening to small snatches of conversation, and occasionally getting caught up in them if they’re on a subject that interests her.

Her most recent experiment involves using her Leftover Residue and its sentient magical properties to create a potion that will give a dragon the capability to detect magically-created intelligences nearby. If successful, she may very well be on the cusp of creating an “anti-scrying” potion, something that eluded even her teacher. She thanks the Gods every day for the accident that created her Leftover Residue, for although he was an unintentional creation, he has accelerated her work beyond her wildest dreams. Plus, he makes for a great gel pillow when she falls asleep at her desk

A proud alumni of Rue's Orphanage!
As soon as Athame was brought into the orphanage, she became acquainted with the local alchemist that lived there, and wants nothing more than to grow up and be a scientist! She can't stop reading books for a single second. She's very shy, and doesn't make friends easily, so we ask that whoever hopes to adopt her is patient with her and gives her lots of space to grow out of her shell and bloom into the beautiful flower that we know she is! And she tells the best jokes, seriously.
