Personality
Lapis is hyperactive and has a short attention span when it comes to anything but her inventions.
If anything, one might think that she would be best suited amongst Lightning dragons, but she feels at peace her with the tough and resilient Plaguelings. She loves obsessing over her creations and research, but will become grumpy and lazy if she is forced to do something she deems boring.

╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
Early Years
Lapis had always been a very curious fae, constantly tinkering with existing machines and insisting on being the first to examine foreign objects. From her love of work and inventing one would think that she was a member of the Lightning dragons, but no, she was born amongst Shadows in the Wispwillow Grove. Her fellow Shadelings always frowned upon her obsessions, eventually giving up on trying to get her to come with them to social events of any kind. Once she took interest in a project, she could happily stay locked up in her little corner, even not eating for days. Eventually a worried friend would drag her out to eat, but her interest in machinery only grew with age.

At one point her friends stopped bothering her, and once the complaints about her 'laziness' started, she bid farewell to the rest of her clan and set off on a journey.
Her destination was The Lightning Farm, where she hoped to meet fellow engineers. The most difficult part was travelling through the land of the Tidelord, for you see, Lapis absolutely despises water. Not considering a few bumps in the road and a very angered pack of dragon-eating fish, her trip went according to plan.

Once she arrived to the Lightning Farm, she felt like she was in heaven. As long as she provided results, she was left alone to do as she pleased. But the Lightning dragons were much different than the Shadelings. It was always just "work! work! work!", constant "hurry up, we needed this done yesterday!" and the deity seemed to orchestrate it all. While she was happy to work, she wasn't happy to do work that left her with no free time for her own projects. Having enough of the busy schedule, Lapis packed her stuff and left the Shifting Expanse. But with no destination she was just a wandering, defenceless fae.

In the end it was her trip to the Starfall Isles that changed her fate forever.

She arrived to the Focal Point late at night, too tired to even bother finding a decent sleeping spot. She merely hid all her belongings and crashed on the first available tree branch. Luck wasn't on her side though, and she was awoken by the sound of something flying towards and around her. She was startled and jolted up only to find strange creatures flying around her. At first they glowed in a soft pink light, but once they got closer the mist surrounding them morphed into gruesome shapes in dark blue, purple and black colors.

A part of Lapis thought 'Hey, maybe they're friendly!'. It immediately got a sock in its mouth after one of the creatures moved its mist towards Lapis like it was a whip and missed her head by what were probably a few millimetres. The bark where the creature had hit burned off, and the gaping wound starting sizzling with a purple acid-like goop.

Lapis screeched and jumped off the branch, her belongings forget in the flee for her life. The creatures followed her, beginning to chant ominous messages. The voices were uncoordinated, making it impossible for Lapis to know what they were saying.

She ran as fast as she could, leaping from branches and flying over clearings, but there was only so much her small Fae body could handle, and she was exhausted before even reaching the end of the treeline. After a particularly annoying creature crashed into Lapis' side she lost her balance and crashed into a nearby tree and collapsed, too tired to move anymore. All the running had left her hyperventilating for air and the creatures closed in on her, their chanting finally making sense, even for her dazed and tired mind.

The voices were incoherent for the most part, but a few words were understandable enough, as creepy as they were.

"Finally!"
"He thought he could get away! Not this time!"
"How nice to see you again."

"Hello, marked one."

The creatures sank their teeth in the small Fae's body - or at least she assumed they were teeth, the creatures didn't seem to have any physical bodies apart from their mist and the soft glow in their core. They tore at her flesh, but Lapis was unable to make a sound, too tired for her body to move. Strangely enough, she didn't actually feel any physical pain. It was something deep inside of her that felt hurt and alarmed, and it was telling her to run. Fight back. Anything.

'Do something, you can't let them catch you.'

Lapis tried to focus, but all she could do is flick her tail, which accomplished absolutely nothing. The creatures didn't slow down and soon she felt like they were tearing at her very soul. Her vision started going blank, and the same primal voice deep inside her spoke again. It did not use words, it was more like a loud shout, and whatever it did, it worked. The creatures momentarily fled, taking shelter behind nearby objects.

That voice felt like a whole different person. It sure as hell didn't feel like a part of Lapis, it was more like another set of emotions, a unique string of feelings and memories captured deep inside her, never to be let out into the light of day. She realised that much - whatever the creatures were, they planned to get to that part of her, where this voice was hidden, even if it meant tearing her apart to get to it.

Lapis managed to stagger to her feet and open her wings, leaping towards the nearest branch. She never reached it, instead being dragged back down to the ground by the angry creatures. Their words had turned into incoherent, unholy screeching and their misty bodies began to crackle like electricity.

Lapis was frightened and frustrated to the brink of tears, trying to kick away the creatures with her legs and what little energy she had left, but all she hit was air.

And then slowly, one by one, the creatures' hold on her disappeared. More crackling and screeching echoed through the trees, and Lapis finally dared to turn around to see what was happening.

The creatures had been (somehow) torn to shreds, their cores now just flickering lights going out and the mist being carried away by the wind. Where the creatures levitated now stood a young Tundra male. He wiped his paws on the ground, leaving glitter-like residue on the grass. He carefully scanned his surroundings for any more of the vile creatures before turning to gaze at Lapis. He carefully approached her and stuck his head out at her.

Lapis was too scared to move or even flinch. The stranger did just tear apart a pack of, of- whatever those things were. Since she gave no sign of resistance, the Tundra leaned in and sniffed Lapis' scent in. He softly poked her with his snout and she limply fell into his face. He picked her up with great care and set her down on the ground. He seemed kind enough, but something was holding him back, evident in his eyes.

His tail flicked and swished around while Lapis gathered the strength to properly sit up and thank the stranger for saving her life. He merely eyed her and shook his head. "Don't thank me, really." He looked around at the last few clouds of mist. "They really are vile creatures, aren't they." He gave a scoff and pawed at some of the mist. "Not that I blame them."

Lapis tilted her head, obviously confused. "They tried to kill me, they - they were slashing at me, chased me, and you say you can't blame them? I didn't even provoke them, unless I perhaps slept on their sacred ritual branch or something!"

The stranger pursed his lips into a line, obviously trying to hold back from saying something. "You..." He sighed and sat down next to Lapis. "How much... Do you actually know?" Lapis blinked at the Tundra. "How much do I know? I know plenty! I know where to get the best mechanical parts, I know the best way to teach Zeebas math, surprisingly enough I know how to cross the sea on a Cobra Snakehead, and I know the best place for getting-" The stranger silenced her with a scoff and a swish of his tail.

"No, I meant how much do you know about these creatures and why they attacked you?" Lapis looked down at her claws and rolled her tail around herself. She honestly had no idea and simply shook her head, making the stranger sigh. "Great, you're clueless." He looked down at her, deep in thought.

"Would you like to know?"

Did she want to know, though? It sounded rather ominous, but in the end her curiosity got the better of her and she nodded in agreement. Her eyes went as wide as saucers when she realised that her body started to relax. With a loud squeal she jumped high in the air, far above the Tundra and started patting down her body.

Belly? Intact. Tail? Still there. Wings? Untorn. Face? Eh, no worse than before. So, if all the creatures tore and slashed at her body, why weren't there any wounds?

Lapis landed on the ground with a soft thug, her tail in her hands. She looked up at the stranger worriedly and let out a scared, high-pitched and questioning whine. He sighed and began to explain.

"So, as you've noticed your body is unharmed. That's because it was healed after the Ethris attacked you. That's what those things were, by the way. Ethris. It's - it's a plural word, if you were wondering. There's never really just one of them around. It's a bit weird, I know, but if you have to just say 'one of the Ethris', or 'an Ethris' or whatever. Anyway, they're spirits of sorts. Like living, sentient magic."

Lapis flicked her ears impatiently. "Okay, but why is sentient magic after me?" The Tundra growled in annoyance. "I was getting to that, so, uh, - wait, what's you name? I'm Balios." Lapis nodded curtly. "Lapis." Balios hummed and went on with his explanation. "Well, Lapis, from what I know, Ethris don't work on their own. They don't even think on their own - sure, they might seem to have separate thoughts, but they work and think as one. And that makes them all the more dangerous. They coordinate attacks and don't act on personal judgement, but instead on a one universal thought. They can sense the magic around them, and in a way, they're like the keepers of balance. They don't actually care about balance, they have no sense of it, but they know limits of magic. And when something steps out of those limits, they go in a frenzy trying to fix it."

Lapis scrunched her nose. "And did I step out of those limits? What the heck, I don't even do magic. I'm an engineer, for Sornieth's sake!" Balios glanced at her and shrugged. "You kind of did, though. Not that it's even your fault. Just like it isn't theirs. They were just trying to fix something that shouldn't exist. You see, uh, you're like me." Lapis tilted her head like a bird. "Like you?"

"Yes, like me. We have this thing inside of us. It's called a Mark." Lapis remembered her attack earlier. What did one of the Ethris call her? 'Marked one'? Balios went on, not noticing her train of thought. "This mark is what drew the Ethris in. Once you were close to them, they sensed it and started chasing you. As for where these marks come from... Well, I don't know if it's the same for you, but to me it had always felt like the Mark wasn't really a part of me. It's like there's this second life inside of me, and it should stay wherever the hell it's buried, because it really wouldn't be good if it activated."

Lapis tried to process the information - yes, her 'Mark' did in fact seem detached. "Why would it be bad if it activates? How does it activate anyway? And where did it come from? I don't remember eating anything weird and I'm sure I wasn't hexed!" Balios sighed, thinking how the poor, innocent little Fae was about to have her illusions crushed into smithereens.

"Okay, so you know the Shade right? The legend of it? Well, a long time ago - what, centuries? Maybe a few millennia? Either way - a long time ago, a new group appeared. They were more of a cult, actually. I don't know much about them since they existed so long ago, but I know that they were somewhat small in numbers and all expert magicians. They were trying to bring the Shade back."

Lapis gaped at Balios in disbelief. "Bring the Shade back? That goopy pile of smoke? Why?" Balios merely shrugged and went on with his story. "No idea. They were a weird underground cult, after all. Anyway, they became notorious for their black magic and research. Eventually they started to make progress -or so the legend goes- and the authorities became scared. A manhunt began, and they were marked as dangerous criminals to be disposed of at any cost."

"The members were powerful, but they were just a small group against entire nations. They started losing the fight, and when they realised they couldn't escape, they made a new plan. They made this spell, and it extracted all of their magic and life force. Once that was separated from the body, they added their minds into the mix. Like attaching a copy of your memories and thoughts for a piggy-back ride. Once that was done, all they had to do was release it into the world. No one could see or catch pure magic and thoughts, so they drifted around with one goal in mind; finding a new host. Apparently they float around until they stumble across someone who has a body almost identical to its original owner, and then it attaches to their personal magic."

Lapis rubbed her face, deep in thought. "So, it's safe to say that we - and whoever else has this 'Mark' looks just like the cult member from who knows how long ago?" Balios nodded and crossed his front paws. "Yeah, but that's pretty much all I know. The Marks inside of us have some powerful dark mage's powers and minds inside of them, and they're dangerous. I have no idea when they attached, how long they stay, if we can get rid of them, if they have the power to take over..."

An uncomfortable silence fell between them. Lapis finally snapped and scoffed at the Tundra. "Well, that doesn't really sound like super-duper reliable information if you ask me." Balios glared at her with a look of annoyance. "Excuse you? Do you have any idea how much trouble I went to dig up that information? How many years it took me?"

Lapis raised her head in mock fanciness. "Whatever." She noticed him eyeing her and scrunched her nose. "What?" Balios hummed and stood up. "Nothing. So, you plan on staying here until the Ethris come back or would you prefer coming along with me? I'm not exactly rich but I get by. We could watch out for each other I guess, and I could teach you how to fight those things off."

Lapis considered bolting for a moment, but deemed her legs to unreliable and instead flew to the Tundra's shoulder, digging her claws in the soft fur. "Yeah, why not." And with that they set off, leaving Starfall Isles behind. Only once they were already in the Scarred Wasteland did Lapis remember all her forgotten belongings. And after weeks of travelling, Balios was determined to not go back for something like that. The due became very close, and while they were headed towards the Light domain, they took a liking to the Wasteland and decided to make a clan in the land.

But first, they needed to pledge their loyalty to the local deity. They headed for the Wyrmwound, and once there, they were greeted by a sleepy-looking Imperial and a twitchy Mirror. The Mirror appeared in top shape, but his constant muttering and pacing around made him seem a tad strange. The Imperial, on the other hand, merely sat at the side of the Wyrmwound and yawned, his eyes lazily following his friend around. The strange growths from the Wound had grown over the Imperial and his wings and legs were covered in strange growths that looked like a mix of mushrooms and moss.

Lapis and Balios exchanged looks, wondering if maybe they should turn around, but by then the Mirror noticed them, glaring in their direction. "Oi! You two daisy hoppers! What're ya doin' here? If ya stick around long enough yer skin will peel right off, ya know! Go on, scram!" Balios spoke up, with Lapis to frightened and hiding under his wing.

"Um, we're here because we'd like to join the Plague flight." The Mirror huffed in annoyance, bolting to a nearby chest to grab something. "Well why didn't ya say so?! Come on, step forward." When the travellers approached, he told them to raise their left hand or wing - to their own preference- and recite the Plague pledge along with rejection of their old deity. Both of which this author is too unoriginal to write.

When finished, the Mirror walked up to the Imperial and smacked him on the tail. "Get up ya bum! Go say hi to your new fellow Plaguelings." The Imperial got up on shaky feet and stretched lazily before walking over to the pair. In one swift motion he grabbed Balios and started pushing him towards the Wyrmwound while the Mirror cast some sort of spell over it.

Lapis almost fell off of Balios' shoulder and he barely managed to grab her. "Wh-Hey! What are you doing!" The Mirror licked his paws and watched the Imperial carry them over to the Wound. He looked up at the sky and smiled. "Hey Momma, say hi to your new pups!" With that, the Imperial tossed the screeching duo into the Wyrmwound.

Balios and Lapis clung to each other, screeching like Harpies the entire time. Once they hit the surface of the Wound they expected pain from the acid, but instead a warm wind engulfed them. They realised that they were tossed into a portal, and two plague emblems floated above each of their foreheads for a few moments before disappearing.

They landed on a dusty, crumbling surface with a loud thud. They heard the Mirror's voice again as he approached them, licking his paws. "Congrats, I now pronounce you honorary Plaguelings." He wiped the saliva off his paws and onto two sticker-like fabric Plague emblems and smacked one on each of the two dragons. He turned around and disappeared into thin air. "See ya at the next Dom."

Balios waited a few moments before sighing. "Not that I don't love seeing your face, but Lapis, babe, could you please get off my face? Your claws are digging into my nostrils." Lapis yelped an apology and jumped down to the ground. They were in a rather empty piece of land, but they could see a familiar town in the distance.

"This is our new lair, huh?" The two walked around until they reached a tall stone wall that continued into a nearby hill. It obviously had some sort of cave system on its surface and there was a water stream under them. Balios shrugged and sat down. "I guess this will do." Lapis hummed and went to sit down next to her mate.

"So, what about now? What if we meet other Marked ones?" Balios gave her a comforting nudge. "They can join us if they like. Won't that be nice?" Lapis leaned on her mate and shut her eyes, tired from the trip and happy to finally have a place to call home. "Yeah."

And with that, their clan began growing, only accepting other stray souls with a Mark. Very few got to know of their secret, and the rest were treated normally, like they didn't live with a secret that they did not know about.

They lived in a clan with a dark secret that should never see the light of day.
