RILOCHEN
{ree∙lokgh'∙en}

Outcast | Shade-Touched | Selfish | Stubborn

—————————-

Ghost Song - Max Ablitzer

Rilochen was a suitor to Hennamae before his selfish nature was amplified by the influence of the Shade. By all appearances he was a normal dragon, with good qualities and nothing to truly turn Hennamae or the rest of the clan from him. However, as time drew on, proximity to the more heavily Shade-touched areas within the Hewn City tainted his already borderline internal darkness, and he became hostile and withdrawn from the Singing Hollow clan. The other dragons attempted to help him and bring him back to the light, but he continued to spiral, whispering lies and cruel words to Hennamae until one moonless, cloudy night he attempted to attack and kill her. The only reason that she survived is the watchful eye of Nephralis, who came to her aid. Since then, Rilochen was cast out of the clan. He still lurks around, more and more overtaken by the Shade each day.

Rilochen was incubated as a Lightning hatchling, but before he hatched was stolen by a particularly infamous, mischievous group of exiled Shadow dragons. On their way back to their home on the coastal border of the Tangled Wood, having cut through the territory of a bustling, large clan, the party of bandits ran across a patrol of Light dragons with more brawn than they could handle, and in their scramble to get away from the warning bolts of magic they lost the flickering greenish-blue egg. Too concerned with escape to go back for one pilfered egg out of many, the troupe of bandits made off without it.

Once the defending party of dragons had ensured that the intruders were gone, they carefully gathered up the egg and the few other supplies that the exiles had left behind, and returned to their camp in the Sunbeam Ruins. Being very close to hatching, it only took a few days of proper care and incubation before the eggshell cracked and the Lightning dragonet blinked his eyes in the light of the sun. He was welcomed warmly by the Light clan he'd found himself in, and was raised as one of their own. He learned swiftly and worked hard, though he did enjoy simply spending time playing with the other fledgling dragons. However, Rilochen, as he'd named himself, never felt quite at home with the other hatchlings of the clan-they often gave the dark-colored, sometimes ill-mannered hatchling odd looks-and once he'd mastered flight and hunting for himself he went to the leaders of the clan and expressed his feelings as truthfully as he could. They accepted his plea for freedom to leave more readily than he'd expected, and even gave him supplies to take with him on his journeying.

His departure was not as easy as he had hoped, and he considered going back more than once. Nevertheless, he continued, knowing that he would eventually find where he was meant to be. Something had told him that he must go forth, a twinkling in the ominous night of his dreams, and he knew that he must follow it or continue being discontent with his life and station in his adoptive clan. There, he was looked upon as the poor, lost hatchling, and was treated more gently than the adolescents bred and born in the clan. Because of this, he'd lost favor with the other dragons his age, and he knew that he could never truly fit in with them.

So he set out, traveling along the coastline, admiring the thickening trees and their proud trunks, and the way the light seemed to travel over them just so, making them beautiful beyond compare. The sea breezes reached him beneath the proud boughs, refreshing him and motivating him to carry on. He paid no attention to how long he'd been journeying, taking the time to reflect on what he really was hoping to find and to daydream about his new life. One day, as he was rising before the sun had breached the horizon, he suddenly had the urge to turn inland, and quickly. There almost seemed to be a voice telling him, go now. He obeyed the overpowering notion, gathering his few belongings and taking swiftly to the air.

Soon, Rilochen began to recognize the scent of other dragons. He focused intently on it, following it as if he had no other choice. He flew faster, excitement making his heart pound. This was it. He was on the verge of finding his new life. He rounded the trunk of a particularly grand cedar, skirting the bark so closely that he could practically taste it. He had no time to even think as he collided headfirst with another dragon. With a rather undignified squawk he scrambled to get a grip on the tree trunk, wings tangling with those of the other dragon. He caught himself deftly, and after shaking his head to clear it, peered around with a vague combination of embarrassment and annoyance.

His gaze settled on a young female Imperial, perched expertly on one of the thick, curving boughs of the massive tree. Her coppery wings caught the sunlight just right and seemed to glow with an inner fire, her eyes meeting his in a somewhat humorous, somewhat affronted manner, with their own fiery spark. The voice he'd heard earlier seemed to say, there she is. His heart seemed to leap into his throat. Was this really the beginning of his new, happy life? Would this dragoness somehow be the gateway to that?

They were silent for a few heartbeats, and then she politely asked who he was and why he was tearing around at such a frantic pace. Rilochen couldn't help but laugh, and saw his own humor reflected in her bright eyes. After a bit of conversation and small backstory, Hennamae, as she told him her name was, invited him to accompany her back to the Singing Hollow. She made conversational comments about his surprisingly blunt spines and ridges, and he could see the burning curiousity barely restrained in her eyes. He explained to her that this was probably because of his bloodline-he only had Ridgeback ancestry in his great-great grandparents on his father's side, and somehow the gene had made its way to him through all the Wildclaw, Coatl, and Nocturne ancestry. Growing up in a Light clan had done wonders for his research skills, and he was glad to see that she was impressed with this knowledge.

A small journey later, they arrived at the crest of a softly sloped hill, crowned by giant cedars whose trunks were obviously influenced with magic to form a grand, arching entranceway into the large hollow beyond. An intricate web of delicate-looking but sturdy string was woven through the boughs of the gateway, strung with glass ornaments of all shapes and sizes that caught the light and reflected it in a myriad of glinting colors. Rilochen was fascinated by the beauty of it, and had to pause a moment to study the complexities of the weaving. Hennamae was amused at his distraction, but patiently waited until he looked back to her to continue onwards. They made their way down the opposite side of the hill, the lush, golden-green grass whispering beneath their feet. Further down in the broad hollow, there were a few other dragons stretched out in the warm air, making idle conversation.

Rilochen looked around intently. He spotted several entranceways similar to the one at the top of the hill-elegant openings in otherwise thickly woven walls of living branches and interspersed with more glass ornaments. The largest tree-grown structure he assumed was the main lair, with plenty of space and what even seemed to be a second floor, complete with a woven branch floor. Each structure was simply a grove of the grand trees that made up this territory, he concluded. They must have taken quite a long time to get just right, or at least a lot of hard studying and perhaps the help of some Nature dragons.

Further along in the hollow, the ground seemed to slope downwards and curve away. Curiosity growing stronger, Rilochen felt the urge to run ahead and explore whatever lay down there, but Hennamae was leading him to a particularly massive tree, this one an ancient redwood, whose trunk had been skillfully hollowed without actually killing it. "I'll introduce you to the Founders first," Hennamae said, "They'll likely be here, in the library." They found the two adults, just as she said, and she explained the situation, with much help from the subject of the conversation himself. From there Rilochen was welcomed easily, and was quickly introduced to the rest of the clan. He was rather taken aback at how quickly he was accepted, but couldn't help feeling a warm glow when he realized that he had already become a part of the family.

Now, Rilochen has grown to be a kind and compassionate dragon, with a healthy dose of love for fun and discovery. He knows how to take charge if needed, but prefers to let Hennamae do most of the decision-making in the clan-after discussion with the others of the High Council, of course. His birth Flight's drive for hard work still fuels him though he did not spend much time in the Stormcatcher's domain, and he likes to properly balance his leisure with his duties. He is not the most talkative dragon in the clan, but can hold a well-balanced conversation if he gets into one. He has a concerning selfish, close-minded streak, however, and this sometimes causes concern and ill notions about him within the clan. He has only traveled back to the clan that raised him on very few occasions, stopping in to catch up and merely visit for old times' sake.
