Biography

SCHATTE
Mediator
tumblr_o1zrsv44JN1ufdm5xo3_400.png
Forgotten Crown Black Queen Depleted Sacridite

Formerly a worker in a Lightning Flight lamp-bulb factory, Schatte was always more fascinated by the shadows the swinging globes cast than their electric glow itself. Following a fateful visit of a Shadow envoy to her compound, the then-young Skydancer, brimming with simmering dissatisfaction at the structured routine of her life, finally decided to leave the Shifting Expanse once and for all, and travel to the mysterious land of shadows that so long whispered to her in her dreams. Upon arriving in this promised land (far darker and marshier than Schatte ever suspected), hoping to be of service to the local rulers and legislators, she found the Tangled Wood in a state of chaos, confusion - factions engaged in constant feuding and scheming as much against each other as the other flights, vying for power and control and revenge for long-forgotten slights so be-webbed with obscurantism that one hardly knew what the original reason for their conflict was.

The young Spark was stunned. Having been raised amongst all the order and rigidity of Lightning society, the fickle and capricious nature of the Shadowlings ran opposite to all she knew, and yet awakened a deep sense of belonging and affection within her. Schatte longed to uphold this strange yet oddly familiar land, polish it, protect it, raise it up to cast its great and broad-winged shadow over all the other nations, dragons. Imbued with a solid core of congealed determination, the Skydancer decided to make use of the natural tendencies of her origin and breed to become a mediator between the feuding clans, untangling the webs of political intrigue permeating the Tangled Wood and forging it into a force to be reckoned with.

Of course, such a unified force would need a leader. A ruler. A queen, perhaps. Upon her initiation into the Shadow flight during a ritual ceremony at the Thorndark altar, this latent will for power awakens, boiling over into the conscious mind of the Skydancer, and in a strange confluence of ritual and chance, it is heard by the Shadow mother herself. She laughs, the divine presence of her great and ancient mind towering above the wisp of the mortal’s soul.

“Such ambition!… The board is set, all pieces in position- oh, I shall watch this with great enjoyment!”

The presence recedes, fading back into the ubiquitous gloom, and leaves Schatte stunned, reeling. No other dragon seems to have felt it, this magnificent pressure of a god’s soul, all continue with the ritual unaware of its summoning power. In Schatte too, the encounter’s details fade, dissolve into the unsubstantiated conviction of the unremembered importance of a dream, a fleeting and fickle vision. And yet, it does not disappear completely - some aspect of the shadow presence remains, a ghostly smoke coursing through her scales, bringing with it whispers in some long forgotten language, muttering in the darkened backstage of her thoughts. Schatte accepts this without question - her existence before the ritual had been shed, a hollow carapace, and the whispers seem to be only further testament to the profundity of her change and acceptance into the Shadow Flight. And besides, her mind is almost wholly consumed with concerns of reifying her great plan of triumph and conquest, she does not- will not- bother herself with inexplicable phenomena.

And so, Schatte, already seeing herself crowned with ambition, sets out in search of a middle ground, a neutral base of operations from which she could extend the insidious influences of her scheming. Coming upon a ruined castle half-sunk into the driftwood drag, the Skydancer decides it would do perfectly, upon alighting, however, she finds it already occupied by a lone flightless Ridgeback who haunting its crumbling halls, who welcomes her with a knowing look in his eyes. Schatte’s imperious urge to evict him falters, as the shadow presence erupts in a fracas of frenzied whispers, the smoke flowing through her scales billowing in some otherworldly wind. The dragon had found her home.

Over time, Schatte played an ever-larger role in the creation of the Cranesong Clan, standing as one of the foundational pillars of its existence. She is well known amongst the various Shadow clans in the Driftwood Drag, and is currently on the verge of forging a peace treaty between two rivaling rulers, in an attempt to solidify an alliance.
