Biography
Rana
Guardian of the Hatchlings
Guardian of the Hatchlings
"Here to Lend a Claw"
When they came upon Ista, not so very far from Rana's own birthclan in the Sea of a Thousand Currents, she settled in almost immediately. The clan was looking for a new carer for their hatchlings, Caph having flown to another clan, following the call of the water. Caph had been gentle and easy-going with the hatchlings, swinging them round with his tail and letting them ride on his back. It seemed he had simply fallen into the task and had been so good at it, he had never been allowed to leave his position in the nursery. It was not quite so easy for Rana. Though she loved hatchlings dearly, and though it made her swell with pride to watch them grow and be both referee and support in their games and schemes, she did not like to be touched without warning. The first time a hatchling jumped on her back, she froze completely, her spines stiffening and her whole body trembling with the effort of keeping still and not throwing the little skydancer through the wall. Her difficulty with physical contact made the other dragons question why, exactly, she wanted to spend time with hatchlings, who couldn't possibly restrain themselves. She didn't really have an answer for them. She liked the organisation, she supposed; a mix of careful planning for the day and the chaos they brought with them. She liked the challenge of having to improvise when they grew restless. She liked their innocent games, their wonderfully petty problems. She liked that, most of the time, she knew what to do about those problems. She began to get used to the casual touches. She didn't like them - they still made her uncomfortable, still made her want to jump back, to throw them off, to hide in a corner until they all went away - but she learned how to hold herself still, how to encourage them off. And the hatchlings began to learn, too. The nursery had it's own kind of heirarchy: Rana was the General, the oldest hatchlings her Lieutenants. It was their job to pass on instructions and rules to the newest additions to the nursery. Quite to her surprise, Rana discovered that 'Don't touch Rana without her permission' had been added to the list of rules, in Alyagaster's chicken-scratch writing. Sometimes the hatchlings still forget themselves, of course. They are impulsive and care-free by nature, but now they are far more contrite and quick to soothe her. Rana can't say how much she appreciates the change. |
