Biography

When the tundra Baxil saw the guardian fly overhead, he was transfixed. Her body the brilliance of sunlight, her wings the blue of the sky... he was fascinated, and wanted to be where she was. So he followed her. And stayed, despite her early efforts to discourage him.

Baxil is curious about everything, is amused by everything, and loves the exotic. It is possible he belongs more to the realm of the Archanist than to Light, yet he stays -- a support to Kikitt and her studies, and an emissary between her and the rest of the world. He watches the growth of the clan with amusement, and fills the Suncliff Lair with his booming laughter.

Baxil knew Kikitt led with her head rather than her heart... so when she came to him to present her reasons for seeking a consort, he was not surprised, oh no.

He was disappointed, though.

It was the way of dragons, to partner with many. Kikitt had often partnered with other drakes; and he had partnered elsewhere as well. And she was right... their children tended to be odd, unattractive color combinations.

It made sense.

And she would always be his First.

So he assented, and shared a nest with her -- a tribute to feelings not hurt, he supposed.

Then she went to the markets to search for her consort... and he went to market as well, to search for the proper scrolls to make himself more desirable to her.

The change came strangely. He was stronger, larger... but was he still himself? He tried out his belly-laugh.

Yes, yes... he thought so. Perhaps this would turn Kikitt's head...

He soon found that he didn't need to turn Kikitt's head. He liked his new look, but he was still his old self... and he did all the things he had done as a tundra. And if his belly laugh sounded spikier coming from a ridgeback, he was okay with that. And with himself.

"You didn't need to do that for me," Kikitt said to him one day.

"I did it for you at first," Baxil replied, "but I found that I liked it for me." He smiled, and she smiled back.

"Perhaps I shall give the Consort a break for this egg cycle," she said. "For old times." And Baxil smiled again in anticipation.

Baxil no longer feels the need to prove himself to Kikitt. If she is the Lair's head, he is its heart. She gives thought to the clan's management, and he gives ear to the clan's grievances, heartaches and troubles. Thus, if anything troublesome happens among the Lair's population, Baxil is likely to hear of it first.

It was a complete accident that the scatterscroll's magic happened to hit Baxil. His original colors -- carmine, mulberry, and the hidden denim gave way to something much different. ... Oddly, more appropriate to the Lightweaver's realm. It would take some getting used to, but... he thought he could probably handle it.
