Biography

Gabriel

Gabriel watched, mesmerized, as the dragons outside heaved large stone slats to stack on top of one another, slowly reaching higher towards the sky. It was ceremonial, every single year, for his parents to have something new built in the large expanse of courtyard at the front of their house. Everything for his parents had to be expensive, no exceptions for the mundane. In fact, their house screamed perfection. The lush roses that caressed the marble walls, the large statues inlaid with priceless jewels and metals. Even he was an object to marvel at. Gabriel's high cheekbones, smooth and unblemished skin and well-maintained social appearance did nothing to tarnish his family and their societal position. His parents sense of self-worth was greater than anything, and it cast long, expectant shadows over the world. When he was younger, Gabriel had one goal. And that was to keep his parents pleased, for as long as possible. He was able to reach this goal easily. Gabriel was praised endlessly for his perfect behavior, his perfect grades and his perfect life. Inside, though, the perfection only went so far.

Ever since he could speak Gabriel's parents had hired tutors for him. Math, Science, Magic, you name it. He excelled at everything thoughtlessly, his little heart pounding for something more. He was privileged to a point of losing his identity to become his life and parents. He had servants to cater to his every need, seamstresses to tailor his clothes, pets to be taken care of by their own hired owners, and hunters to accompany him on walks and in flight on restless days. As Gabriel grew older he began to slowly develop resilience and passion, and eventually he outgrew his need to impress his parents.

Fullygrown and adventurous, Gabriel began to sneak out of his home. He'd open his window, fly to the grove and slip through the tall, sweet-smelling trees. Red currents squished beneath his feet, plump and slippery. They stained the forest floor wityh deep red hues, and in the night it was eerie to see their contrast with the white lilies sprouted strangely in beautiful patterns. Among other things, Gabriels family was known for their floral arrangements and their groves. Wine trees, fruit trees, chestnut and walnut trees, maple, pine and oak trees, and a whole grove full of birch trees alone. These groves protected their house with their odd wilderness, and gave the village one more thing to envy.

Gabriel was currently weaving through the pine, oak and maple tree grove. It was uncomfortably close to the main gates that sliced through the land with quartz tiles and silver furnishes, where most of the guards stood. Gabriel knew the guards schedule well from his years in the palace, and used the two minute exchange to sneak past the inner circle of guards. The outer were far less complicated and of fewer ranks, simple to navigate through. Rarely, but occasionally, vagabonds made it through the outer ranks and inhabited the groves, surviving off their bounty. The few who had been successful were hung.

As the trees began to thin out, and the thin, shadowy figures of the village outskirts could be seen, Gabriel slowed his pace and tread lightly across frail branches and mossy stones. He reached the edge of the grove, quickly checked for any of the guards who frequently circled the property and flew. Gabriel shot above the grassy plains, barely ten metres off the ground. He itched to look back, but in past experiences he had learned it did no good.

Gabriel landed softly outside the village, walking around the perimeter, entering through a hole in the back wall of its makeshift barrier. The outer villagers were persistent, and poor at best.

As soon as he was through Gabriel skirted the main villas, the houses of those who were deep in debt, drowning in it in fact, but refusing to abandon their semi-privileged lives. Gabriel slowly made his way towards the heart of the outer homes, the night market.

Music thrummed across his skin, alive like the system that pumped blood through Gabriel's pulsating body. Light struck interesting shapes across the ground, ones that danced with the promise of satisfaction. Gabriel, weeks ago upon first sneaking out to the village, was still awed by the night market. It was like no party he had attended, and no shop he had visited. It was...incredible. Before Gabriel could continue to marvel at its beauty, long, red talons snaked across his exposed shoulder, toying with the edge of the plain cotton cloak he wore.
"Hello luv." A silky sweet voice drifted to his ears, superseding the sound of the loud market music.
Gabriel turned around to face the captor of his heart, and perhaps this newfound adventure altogether.
"Hello Sepia" He murmured, his eyes drifting over the curious planes of her face and the silk headpiece that draped over it. He couldn't see her mouth as she talked, but it wasn't what he was focusing on anyway. Sepia's eyes were dark and all-consuming. Flecks of silver danced in their depths, twirling around tauntingly. Gabriel couldn't help himself, and grinned like a fool for love.

A first free love, if temporary, would not be forgotten. Not for Gabriel. When his life was lived in a cage, his love was lived like a roller-coaster. Thrilling, unpredictable, new and frightening. It made the rest of his life seem abysmal in comparison.

Gabriel is studious and dedicated. He achieves his goals, and achieves his parents praise. Yet he is also an adventurer, brash and innocent. He lives in a constantly offset balance of honesty and dishonesty, to who he is and who he will be. In front of him there is darkness when he dreams of the future. Not malevolent, simply unknown and undiscovered. In his past there is a braid of truths and lies, streaking through each other. Blending together into the hazy mist of forgotten. For now, all Gabriel can do is live, and enjoy it. Because whatever comes next, well, it could be anything.
