Zera's early life was filled with confusion and chaos. She emerged the youngest of four Imperial hatchlings, much smaller than her brother, the eldest of the clutch, and her two older sisters. They grew quickly, as dragons do. Just weeks after they hatched, their parents prepared the whole family for a trip to the Tangled Wood. The father, Fulvius, tried to sound excited for the trip. It was his current home, he said, and they were going to love the cool darkness and dancing shadows that enveloped the land. Zera, however, could feel that underneath his upbeat facade, something was wrong, even though her infant mind couldn't understand it.

After following the rivers, they arrived at the Cloakscreen Clan. It was here that Zera and the others found out what had seemed so off about Fulvius. Since she was so young, all she could remember was a tiny black Skydancer yelling at their father. Their mother, then named Sousobu, seemed distraught at how they argued, especially when Fulvius said, "It was an accident, Beowulf!"

Zera later asked what her father meant by that, but Sousobu dodged the question. Instead, she told her children that she was going to go back to the Viridian Labyrinth. They had the option to stay with their father, or to go on with her. She reassured them that, no matter what they chose, she would love them all the same. Zancon and Frigg, the two eldest, stayed behind, hoping to convince Fulvius to return to the Labyrinth with them. Ami and Zera followed their mother who, in her disgrace, changed her name to Danxiao to adopt a new identity. (Zera later learned that Zancon would go looking for them the very next day. That would be the last both she and her sisters would ever hear of him.)

The females and their mother wandered in the Shrieking Wild for years, knowing that larger clans that could sustain themselves were a better bet than the smaller clans in the Everbloom Gardens. But they never did find a clan to call their own. Most clans were wild and savage, the opposite of what Danxiao wanted for her children. They seemed not to fit into the life of other clans no matter how hard they tried. In spite of their poor fortune, the mother Imperial did her best to teach Zera and her sister how to find and obtain food, how to bargain with clans for money and a place to sleep, and otherwise avoid falling through the cracks in the canopy. Ami went off on her own once she'd learned the ropes.

Zera often thought of what Fulvius had said in her childhood. It was only an accident. As she grew older, she began to realize how a dragon could be an accident to their parents. She was an accident. Her entire clutch was. Though her mother loved her very much, Zera knew that she wasn't even supposed to be in existence. She was a mistake. Her father had all but said that in the past. Now old enough to support herself and travel on her own, she said goodbye to her mother—permanently, she learned. Danxiao had decided it was time to join the ranks of the Gladekeeper.

Zera slowly made her way out of the Viridian Labyrinth, across the sea to the fissure-cracked expanse of Dragonhome. The dragons there kept record of everything and, most of all, revered their ancestors. Not wanting to think of her own, she quickly moved southward to the Starfall Isles, getting in touch with the world's stargazers and daydreamers. At each clan she went to, she would do favors and work in exchange for food and lodging. Even at the kindest clans that insisted she rest as their guest, she couldn't bear to do something for them, even just picking up clutter. She couldn't bear the thought of being a burden.

After leaving the Arcane territory, Zera traveled across to the Windswept Plateau, where she stumbled upon a "clan" that caught her attention. The clan was not just a clan, more of a variety show. The group was filled with all sizes and shapes of dragons, and each one had a talent to share, be it artistry, singing, dancing, even comedy acts. They were led by a Guardian named Anastasia, who was the first to notice Zera's interest in the variety show. She offered to mentor the young Imperial, who took the offer, excited at the thought of a new clan.

In just under a year, Zera became a talented juggler. She could juggle small wooden balls to oddly-shaped fruits all the way up to cleavers and daggers. Her Dwarf Hainu companion named Hesper would often fly through the arcs made by her juggling and catch balls and fruit when Zera was finished juggling with them. Her juggling act was the talk of the Windswept Plateau when she first appeared, and she loved the variety show's popularity in general. She hadn't yet settled, since the show traveled, but it was nice to have a group of dragons to call home.

After several years of success, the show group hit a rough spot financially. After a show in the Wind territory, Zera had a surprise encounter when her sister Frigg met up with her. The reunion was touching. She learned that Frigg kept in touch with Fulvius and Beowulf, the Skydancer who had been so mean all those years ago. Zera wanted to visit them, but she had to stay loyal to the show during this tough spot. Once Frigg went home, however, she chewed on it some more and wrote a letter to her sister, saying that she wanted to have a place to settle down for once. She then gave Anastasia her two weeks' notice.

Zera is happy to be with her sister again, though she is nervous about her next meeting with her father... and her stepfather. She prayed to the Windsinger that neither thought of her as a burden.
