The Cauldron that spawned Vengeance and his four siblings had little to do in the formative moments of the eldest pearlcatcher's behavior, no, that honor went to the poor treatment of him by his siblings and other young troupe members. Bullied for his small stature and odd, shade-twisted visage, Vengeance was too little, too frail thanks to the corruption in his bones to fight back against his much larger siblings. His piteous mother taught him how to defend himself with the sharp, crystallized spines that marred his fragile frame, sprouting from his chest and tail and finer than any sewing needle, Vengeance's talent lies with Voodoo, and hexes. Daring to cross this shade-seer is simply a foolish behavior, leading to terrible luck and often, painful accidents befalling those who may think themselves stronger than the little witch.  He feared he would be alone, isolated in his new home just like at his birthnest, but here he was surrounded by friends and kindred spirits, those who had left the circus long before he was even born. The faces weren't familiar, not exactly, but their words were a comfort, they were home. [ x - x ] Along with them there was an elder Plaguewitch who knew of his affliction, knew it well, well enough to aid him in controlling and honing the Shade within him to be more "useful", if it could be called that. The old witch didn't speak much by way of common, she spoke an archaic form of Plaguetongue but she was able to intersperse it with enough Shadetongue to make it understandable at least. [ x ] And there was one other he met shortly after arrival, one who was special. [ x ] She appeared to be half dead and rotted, not unlike the elder Wildclaw he'd already met, but she seemed much more... sane. She doesn't speak, and doesn't mind when Vengeance approaches her, awkward and nervous, introduces himself and coughs on a mass of shade in his throat. She only smiles, pale pupil-less eyes glinting with mirth. He smiles back, only a little ooze still flowing from his teeth. They fall in love. |
