Nihilus's past is mystery even to himself, not that he shares that information. He has spent the last several decades wandering Sornieth without purpose before hearing rumours of the recent change in power at the Alabaster Court. He presented himself as a powerful, invaluable mage, and the Lord Imperator has granted him a favourable position. While Nihilus has consented to do the Imperator's bidding for the time being, his true intentions remain to be seen.
