Eudoxia

BACKGROUND
Born as the last and thus youngest daughter to a high born family on Zephyr Steppes, she was doted on by both her parents, and her siblings, as well as their extended family. She never had any doubts about being loved by everyone. She probably would have grown up to be quite a selfish and spoiled adult if life hadn't interrupted.

Despite their status her family wasn't wealthy. They made do but times were tough and in the end they fell prey to an opportunist, a dragon with plenty of wealth but no social status. Eudoxia was the only one of the children not yet mated or promised to anyone so the dragon made an offer, help the family back on their feet in exchange for their daughter. The promise came with a threat, refuse and he would ruin them all. So her parents had no option but to agree.

Eudoxia hadn't yet gone through her maturity ceremony and by law he was forced to wait. Her family postponed the thing for years but eventually it had to happen. But so terrified was she that the result of the ceremony, her two-legged meihin form, turned out completely feral. She was still covered in scales, head to toe, just like in her dragon form. In any other circumstances Eudoxia might have felt horror at her failure but only thing she felt was a short blissful moment of relief as he surely wouldn't want her like that. The relief turned out to be short lived as he didn't care about that, only about the status she could give him.

Her parents, realizing that he would take Eudoxia but lock her inside his lair for the rest of her life to hide the shameful meihin form, finally decided to do something about it. The whole family came together to stage her death, allowing her to escape. They couldn't help her much beyond that, only able to bestow on her a family heirloom, an old enchanted armour, and what little money they could scrape by. Essentially she was now on her own. But at least she was free.

It took some time and lessons learned the hard way but she survived. She learned that not everyone had her best interest in their mind, that she couldn't trust others, that she needed to become strong, stronger that anyone else. And that she did. She lived a nomad life of a mercenary for well over a decade before finally happening upon an open position at Pergamon clan, the first official captain of the clan Guard. She managed to convince the clan Matriarch of her skill and competence, as well as good character, and got the job.

Still, she wasn't going to get too comfortable. This wasn't home. She had no home anymore and it was for the best, as that way she wouldn't lose everything ever again.

CURRENT STORY
Orestes had been a thorn on her side for 5 years. 5 long years of struggling to make the Guard a proper fighting force. The Tundra was too valuable to kick out. He might have had a rotten character but somehow he was good at his job, even she had to admit that. And so she had decided to tolerate his behaviour for as long as it took to fix the Guard's reputation and replenish their ranks. But as soon as that was done...

Then one day she happened to see him train on his own, a surprising sight as he was a slacker who skipped the Guard practice as often as he could. Curious, she stayed to watch but not announcing herself. After a moment of regular flight practice with his sword, the Tundra landed and to Eudoxia's astonishment switched to his meihin form. Firstly, the form was considered weak and a huge liability and was thus banned in any kind of battle, so he was in clear violation of rules by using it. But the thing that shocked her even more was that he was completely feral, just like her, except he was covered in fur, not scales. She was too stunned to do anything before he picked up a trident and started a new kind of practice session. And then she was too mesmerized by it to interrupt. There was beauty in it, beauty in him, that she hadn't seen before, and she stayed to watch until the end.

She was angry with herself for getting attracted to the annoying Tundra, yet she kept seeking opportunities to see him again. And she wasn't considering kicking him out nearly as often anymore, which worked to incense her even more when she realized it. Everything about the situation was making her mad.

Then one night Orestes came to see her, having clearly noticed the change in her behaviour and wanting to talk. Despite her better judgement she invited him in. They talked, cleared air, and finally took some time to understand each other. She had already guessed there must have been something else to him than the story the appearances told, but in the end who knows if it was that, or the fault of the wine they had drank, but when he jokingly challenged her to give him an opportunity to make her like him, she accepted, without moments hesitation. She had desired him for long enough.

Next morning made her realize her mistake. She didn't want to think about him as anything other than some brief annoyance in her life. She didn't want to let him, or anyone else, anywhere near her. Except she kinda wanted now. But it would have been a huge mistake, as she couldn't trust him. Later that day she made it clear to him that it had meant nothing, that they should both forget what had happened. He seemed to accept it just fine. Except she couldn't stay away. She was still watching him dance his beautiful trident dance every chance she got. In the end her walls developed enough cracks and she approached him, for friendship this time. She could at least get to spend some time with him if she managed to convince him to teach her how to fight in her meihin form.

It took half a year and an interference from Orestes' friend Phoenicia to finally force her to confess her feelings for him. She realized how much her anxiety had clouded her mind when he made his own confession back, and she finally recognized that his feelings had been there, on his face, on his behaviour, everything, all this time, had she been able to trust him enough to see it.
