Cael always wanted to be a fighter, even as a hatchling. He would play fight with his siblings, which turned to proper sparring as he grew older. At first his parents humoured him; there was no harm in the young Imperial learning self defense. But his enthusiasm only intensified, and once he came of age he proudly presented himself to the clan leaders, pledging to protect his clan to the best of his abilities. They flatly denied him, and deep down Cael knew why. No captain would take the risk of sending a fighter - no matter how skilled - with the capability of turning into an abomination to battle. He was a liability, a catastrophe waiting to happen. And although Cael knew this, he couldn't accept it. He stormed out of the clan, determined to find a place that would appreciate his skills. But even as his desperate journey took him across Sornieth, every place he went to turned him down just the same - none wanted an Imperial anywhere near a battlefield. Eventually, he found a fledgling clan tucked away in the Tangled Woods. Cael began launching into his standard spiel with forced bravado - he had been trained since he was young to fight, and he could fight well. He would like to offer his services to... he faltered, remembering his countless rejections, and made a split second decision to try a new tactic... his services to help train other dragons to fight. The Sanctum agreed, for their forces were small and the lands treacherous. Shocked, Cael was lead to his new home, and left to reel in his unexpected success.

The Sanctum may have let him become a trainer, but Cael knew they would have the same stance as all the others - he can train new Guard members, but he was never to become one himself. He tried to convince him that it'd be enough, but as time went on he grew weary and frustrated. Even his courtship with Tui, who he secretly thought he was falling in love with, couldn't completely fill the emptiness inside him. Until one evening, all the anger and disappointment and bitterness came spewing out. He had kept it bottled up inside for so long, yet there was something about the way she seemed to see right through him that caused him to crumble that cool night. When he was done ranting and raving he sat in silence, shaking. She said nothing for a long moment, then wrapped her wings around him in a fierce hug. It was then he knew he was in love, and decided that while he may never fight alongside the Sanctum Guard, there was a certain dragoness who's side he'd much prefer. Cael has become a lot happier since then, and his forced self-assurance has mellowed into something a lot more natural. He still wishes he could fight, but with Tui's help has finally come to accept that will never be. For the first time in his life, Cael is truly happy with where, what, and who he is.
